The United States is facing an extraordinary immigration crisis. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that 10.5 million unauthorized immigrants were residing in the United States in January 2005 (Hoefer, Rytina, Cambell 1). This crisis has reached a point where it can no longer be ignored. The impact of illegal immigration affects many areas of society, such as employment, medical costs, the courts and correction system, education, and the welfare system. Illegal immigration threatens the quality of life in the United States. First, employment is one issue facing Americans. Tens of thousands of jobs end up being filled by illegal immigrants, especially in the areas of construction, landscaping, hospitality and restaurant work.…show more content…

Immigrant gangs are considered a threat to public safety due to their members’ tendency for violence and their involvement in transnational crime. The National Alliance of Gang Investigators states, “Over the past few decades, the United States has experienced an increase in the number and size of gangs made up largely if not entirely of immigrant youth (legal and illegal) and the U.S.-born children of legal and illegal immigrants” (Feere, Vaughan 2). According to a study for the U.S. Department of Justice, “aliens arrested under Operation Community Shield collectively represent a significant menace to the public. The vast majority (80 percent) have committed serious crimes in addition to immigration violations, and a large number (40 percent) have violent criminal histories” (Feere, Vaughan 1). Luo Dobbs a journalist for CNN reported in 2004, that many illegal aliens are no longer held in jails to await deportation or processing. Rather they are simply handed a notice to appear in court and released back into society. Immigration and Customs Enforcement along with Department of Homeland Security, “admits that nearly half a million people have been arrested and released, and have failed to show up for court” (Dobbs np). Ideally, every illegal alien who is arrested for gang related activities or other crimes should be held until he or she can be removed.
