Daniel Necovski – I’m Not Scared Essay The novel “I’m Not Scared” by Niccolo Ammanitis is narrated by Michele Amaitrano, the central character, as he reflects on ‘that damned summer of 1978’ and his ability to conquer fear in horrific situations. Niccolo Ammanitis depicts a significant stage of the life of Michele Amaitrano who faces circumstances that are not a common occurrence for a nine-year old boy. As the story progresses we witness the growth of Michele and his journey from childhood innocence into maturity by facing his fears. These fears of Michele’s are constantly evident; however his knowledge of what is right and the innate feelings Michele contains help him override his fears. Michele is able to make the most of these unusual and horrifying circumstances placed upon him within the novel by facing them regardless of the fear he contains. Michele has to face fears both imaginative and real in order to stand for what he believes is right. Michele, the very compassionate and caring central character does not let his fears override what is right. The first example is demonstrated when Michele has to face his first real fear of standing up to Skull, the leader of the gang who is a very authoritarian character that likes to give orders. Skull is known to turn nasty when people did not listen to him, ‘Skull was the oldest in the gang. Twelve years old. And he was the chief. He liked giving orders and if you didn’t obey he turned nasty.’ Michele takes the forfeit Skull gives to Barbara as he knows that what Skull had ordered Barbara to do is not the right thing. It is very hard for Michele to stand up to Barbara and face his fear of the leader Skull. It takes Michele a significant amount of courage standing up to Skull. The actions by Michele demonstrated complete kindness, knowing that it was morally incorrect for Skull to authorize Barbara into doing
