After minimal schooling, he traveled around Latin America and eventually ended up in England. He embraced the ideas of the Pan African Movement. These ideas were the groundwork for the organization he founded, the UNIA. He attracted working class blacks, who formed a devoted following of the man and his ideas. Both of these leaders, of course, were interested in the betterment of their race, but their different visions in achieving their goals led to a division that became both philosophical and intensely personal.
How far do you agree that the black power achieved little for black Americans Some of the thing that the black power movement wanted to achieve was self sufficiency to reinforce black culture and to have independence from white people, they did this through a variety of different ways and allot of their campaigns involved violent protests however they saw it as self defence. However whether they were successful in their actions is debatable. One way in which they achieved their aims was with the creation of the Black Panthers. Their main aims were to organise the working class black community improve the conditions in the northern ghettos and implement a 10 point program they had made. They had many different methods of doing this such as patrol the pigs, liberation schools and president elections.

Though jazz music was popular in the 1950s, it was known as ‘black’ music, meaning that white people weren’t associated with the music; it was a cultural division between black and white people in America. When looking at the poem, however, it seems as if O’Hara wants to be part of the ‘black’ music and feel a part of it. Unfortunately he can’t because of the racial division in America at the time. What interests me is that this poem doesn’t attack black people; it instead talks about the problems of being white, which according to the norms of the USA at the time should have been the complete opposite. Amiri Baraka, a fellow poet who was a friend of Frank O’Hara at the time, was black.
The Harlem Renaissance was important because it inspired an explosion of cultural pride and perceived as a new beginning for African Americans. Black Americans were inspired to create works rooted in their own culture instead of imitating the styles of white Americans. African Americans were encouraged to celebrate their heritage and to become “The New Negro” a term coined in 1925 by Alain LeRoy Locke (1885-1954), writer and patron of the arts. At a time when “race men” were glorifying a uniquely African American culture, Schuyler steadily purported the view that African Americans were primarily American, and did not differ from other immigrants. In his essay entitled “Negro-Art Hokum,” Schuyler writes: If the European immigrant after two or three generations of exposure to our schools, politics, advertising, moral crusades, and restaurants becomes indistinguishable from the mass of Americans of older stock…how much truer must it be of the sons of Ham who have been subjected to what the uplifters call Americanism for the last three hundred years. Aside from his color, which ranges from very dark brown to pink, your American Negro is just plain American. (37) Schuyler felt that by viewing Negro art as unique and separate, it helped to perpetuate myths of racial inferiority.
