Human Virtues and Character Strengths Dawn Sturdevant PSY/220 9/20/2013 Charlene Sears-Tolbert Fourth Week Human Virtues and Character Strengths After careful consideration and reading through the text I come to associate myself with the virtue of courage. Courage is very important to me and it helped me to live. Courage, and its defining strengths, Authenticity, Bravery, Persistence, and Zest, all relate to me and my life in one way or another. Not everyone is blessed with courage. Some shirk from it because they are too scared to reach inside themselves for it. Others would rather not deal with it and why it is needed, so they don’t bother. This is a shame because I do wish everyone had an abundance of it. One person that comes to mind, though I don’t watch her show any more, would be Oprah Winfrey. I can still recall when she first started the Oprah Winfrey show and the episode where she told her story. I was in tears. She went through so much before she made it to the top but she did not let it break her. She was molested, mistreated, and practically shunned by her own Mother. She took all of that and went on to become a famous talk show host, an actress, and an owner of her own network. Let’s not forget her magazine either. Courage helped me to survive, just as it did with Oprah. It took telling the truth, through our fear, being real, to be able to tell our stories. It took plodding through our pain, standing up for ourselves, and accepting challenges, to make us what we are today, strong women. Being determined to make it, and be somebody instead of letting life beat us down was very important. Walking straight into life full of energy, and being positive, keeps us going on a daily
