These networking sites have changed the way that individuals, and increasingly businesses, interact with each other. One of the main characteristics of social media is that it is often treated by users as an informal and temporary mode of communication, similar to a chat with a friend over a drink. Privacy and Social Media Social media is a present source in majority of peoples lives in our day and age. The on set popularity frenzy that happened within the 21st century around social media is astonishing and has left little room for most people to question its legitimacy. Why question what the majority has condoned to be safe and beneficial to society? I believe social media is an invasion of privacy, and a danger to society. The lack thereof before the 21st century for such an accessible device to be utilized by people all over the world has created a scarcity for such a phenomenon to be refuted.
Today, the meaning of communication has completely changed. It has become much easier to sustain a relationship through social media and the constant interaction that it provides. In contrast, social media can also prove to destroy relationships. Some people may get so caught up in virtual relationships that they have little to no regard for actual relationships. They may become so used to communicating via internet that they lose basic communication skills and can’t hold a face to face conversation.
It is a person’s own responsibility to make decisions about what websites and/or content are appropriate or not. If a person is not sure as to what the content is, and if they want to view it, they can take the personal risk of entering the website. For example, the Wikipedia website is not a good source of information because normal people write the information in it and not specialists. Therefore, if we get wrong information, then our knowledge would be wrong. Carr also discussed that the Internet is an imaginary world, and all the people are behind the computer screens. Therefore, whenever we access a website, Google can collect more information about us, and if we access more websites, then that would be easier and faster for them to collect the information they want.
People are now able to communicate much more easily, resulting in radical connectivity, where the ability to send vast amounts of data instantly, frequently and globally has transformed life for businesses, culture and even politics. A huge part of digital technology includes social media, which has made consuming information incredibly different from how it was a couple of decades ago. Since the arrival of digital media, the conventions of communication and most senses of hierarchy have been removed, making it customary for a single citizen to be able to send a complaint to their local cinema, to be able to show their support for a charity or even to start a political movement – all through the means of social media, and therefore through digital technology. One form of digital media is Youtube, a platform that has allowed audiences to become much more empowered because of their ability to share opinions in a creative way, making it extremely beneficial for them.
