For many of us, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill served as both Greek chorus and sound track to my childhood. From the first time I heard her spit to the last exhaled inflection, I was hers. She was the cooler big sister I was looking for. For the first time, there was a celebrity who looked like me. Lauryn Hill is an accomplished singer, actress, and writer who found her musical roots with a rap group called the Fugees where she was a femcee of a trio of rappers. She had great success winning Two Grammy’s while with the group and made an album hailed by critics to be one of the best of all time.…show more content…
She won five Grammys, including Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Album and Album of the Year, making the Miseducation the first hip hop oriented album to ever receive that award. Lauryn Hill set a new record in the industry, as she also became the first woman to win five Grammys in one night. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill also earned her several other awards. Lauryn Hill brought neo soul to the mainstream, paving the way for artist like Jill Scott, Erikah Badu, and Angie Stone. She also was one of the first females to make an impact on rap. Most people use Lauryn Hill as the standard to be compared to, be it a female rapper or an aspiring singer. Unfortunately Lauryn Hill left the music industry because she didn’t like what she saw, which I lay the blame to the sorry state of the music industry now.
