Jane Doe English Teacher English 111 2/20/13 How to Saddle a Horse A common misconception is that saddling a horse is too complicated for someone to accomplish and might keep them from riding. Saddling a horse doesn’t take that long at all, approximately about 10 minutes, its easy and simple, providing the horse cooperates. An important part in saddling a horse is that its done properly that way the horse and rider are safe when riding. The first thing I do is go to my barn and get my halter and lead rope. I also grab some ears of corn so I have a snack for my horses. I then go into the pasture where they graze, and whistle for them. Most of the time they come running to me because they know I have food. When my horse is close to me I capture her by placing the halter on her, kind of like u would harness a dog, by putting her nose through the small hole and then strapping the latch on the left side of her head, some halters may vary. We walk to the fence and I open it and walk out, making sure to close the fence so the other horses won't get out. After tying her to the trailer or hitching post I go to the barn and grab the brush caddy, (which is a carrier that had all my grooming accessories,) and set it by my horse but out of reach. I then go back to the barn and grab the saddle stand that has the saddle, pad and bridal already on it and carry all of if to the trailer. Setting it down once again out of reach of my horse so she doesn’t grab anything off of it or kick it over, they are known to do that. Before I saddle her I need to make sure she is brushed down of all dirt and excess hair. I try to avoid standing by her butt, so I don't get kicked. Also I try not to stand directly behind, or in front of her, those are her blind spots which are similar to our blind spots when driving a vehicle.
