According to the LICO rates in 2011, poverty troubles mainly seniors, aboriginals, and single parents. In Canada, Social assistance falls well below the poverty line and fails miserably to provide adequate income for even a moderate standard living. We should ALL try living on such measly income for a month…. Maybe then we would be more sympathetic for those whom live under the poverty line. There comes a time when people grow old and are not physically capable of handling tasks in the work force.
Ableism portrays the skills and talents that the abled-bodied have, while the disabled-bodied are illustrated by the Canadian society as less skilled and have less opportunities due to the labels set on them. Canadian citizens demonstrate disparity by illustrating the unfair differences of the abled-bodied and disabled-bodied openly. Lastly, tokenism always illustrated by many people in various industries and events; they are trying to demonstrate that the disabled citizens are treated equal to the abled-bodied, but it is only appearance for the public to show that they are changing to adapt for the disabled, however it is not working for them. The Canadian society illustrate ableism, disparity and tokenism in the public eyes and exemplify the negative side of the disabled-bodies and their
The mother picked up a job as well, noticing that the bills were much more expensive to pay This was also extremely stressful for the family because they were not getting to see each other as much as they have in the past. The work hours also took a toll on them. They left their beautiful house in India, to an one bedroom apartment for the three of them to share. The eco map states that the only extended family they had in Canada was Balbir's brother. This relationship was strong, and was very important to the family.
As we all know, most people are enjoying spending money rather than saving money. Second, Canadians are living longer which is a very good thing but in effect that Canada’s demographic is shifting to an older population; therefore, there will soon be many more people retire than ever before. In fact, the ratio of elderly to working-age citizens will rise over 16% over the next two decades*. The interest rates are declining, pension plan obligations are
over sevent-five percent of agricultural workers in Ontario are temporary contract migrants. Due to the high amount of working hours and hard physical work that these labourers endure, it is not uncommon for workers to fall ill. However, many workers do not claim medical benefits in the scare that they will be deported back to their home, as more injuries mean more insurance premiums for employees. Not to mention, they are largely underpaid due to the fact that they are considered "independent contractors" and that they are not required to pay minimum wage
And we have most definitely had a hard time with the Indians. With the Komagata Maru, and the Continuous Passage Act, Canada wasn’t greatly appreciated by India. Canada doesn’t exactly have the best past when dealing with immigrants, but in the last 100 years, we have made a much greater effort in allowing immigrants into our country. The Komagata Maru incident, is one of the worst things, in my opinion, that Canada has ever been a part of. Promising that they could come into Canada if they did something, they do it, and then not let them into Canada.
Most of the Canadian employers refuse to hire people if they don’t have Canadian experience (Cheinis, and Sproul 58). “According to Jeffery Lee, employment specialist, employers look for Canadian work experience so that employees are familiar with workplace culture, social cues, and expectations” (Swartz, par. 3). Lupic, in his article about survival job for newcomers mentioned that according to statistic Canada, in July 2008, the majority of immigrants to Canada are educated people but the rate of unemployment among them is far more than the rate among Canadian with less education (par. 10).
In recent years, Canada has received many immigrants because of its advantageous social, environmental and economical conditions. Grady (2009) reports that Canada’s immigration levels have remained very high, since the Mulroney government relaxed its immigration policy to new immigrants in the mid-1980s. A total of about 250,000 new permanent residents and 113,000 temporary foreign workers were welcomed to Canada in 2006 (p.28). When immigrants arrive at a new place; they have to start everything from the beginning. Most will experience a transition period and during this period, they have to establish their own self-sufficiency within the new social structure.
The Challenges of Immigrating to the United States Immigrants are people who leave their hometown to permanently live in a foreign country, usually in pursuit of a better life. Many of these immigrants would move to the U.S. since it was a nation where people could find jobs and get land. The United States was a country where anyone could go to start a new life, however, a majority of these people were usually poor and had to endure a lot before having a normal life. These settlers had to live a hard and demanding life because countless numbers of them were poor families who were constantly struggling to get a living and finding a job. During the 1900s, a large number of immigrants came to the United States of America looking
Meeting the Needs of the Aging Population The aging population of the people born between 1946 and1964 are what we call the Baby Boomers population. Within the next twenty years this population is expected to increase 79% in the number of people over the age of 65. (Shultz, 2010) Many people of this population are seniors who live by themselves and require a little help with their every day needs. These needs include help with a little house cleaning, grocery shopping, or just the need of remaining healthy. There are many who just cannot really get around like they would like.
