The Bubonic Plaque, also known as the Black Death has had a profound effect on human history since the ancient times. The Black Death is a highly contagious disease that causes death within one to three days of contracting it, depending on which type a person has. It can be air born or can spread to humans through fleas that have bitten black rats that are infected with the Bubonic Plaque. When a human comes in contact with the fleas and rats that are infected and are bitten by these infected animals, they also become infected.
Fear and anguish brought out some of the worst qualities in the villagers causing them to turn against one another creating anger, conflict and damage unto one another. In turn these actions fueled by superstition, hysteria and ignorance could become just as fatal as the plague itself. The bubonic plague attacks many individuals in the village as it delivers continuous grief and loss to the whole town. Brooks structures her novel as a non-linear timeline as it jumps backwards and forwards starting after the events of the plague giving hints of what has caused the change in the community. Undoubtedly, the plague causes the disintegration of families in the town.
The Plague, also known as the black death, was one of the most fatal pandemics to ever happen. The disease started in Central Asia. It first infected fleas then rats. The rats started moving into cities, marking the start of a tremendous bloodshed. The disease infected sailors when rats immigrated into ships and kept finding its way through ports, spreading around in different continents.

The Black Death was the first and most severe manifestation of the Second Pandemic, probably caused by the Yesinia pestis bacteria. Though accurate estimates of mortality are difficult to make, the recent trend has been to adjust the estimates upwards. The terrible disease caused not only massive numbers of deaths, but also caused many minority groups to be blamed and persecuted for "causing" the Black Death.
The rodents in Asia had fleas and when fleas bit the animal that was carrying the disease the animal became infected. The fleas also produced larva in the fur which also had the bacteria called Pasteurella pestia. Once the rodents’ population decreased, the fleas went on to other animals this including humans. A plague is a disease that spreads extremely quickly and kills many people violently. Most scientist think that the Black Death was caused by a type of bacteria called Yersinia Pestis carried by the oriental rat flea. These fleas infested black rats and unfortunately, due to the unsanitary lifestyles of humans during the Middle Ages, these rats were literally everywhere. Once contracted by a human the disease became airborne.

The Giardia parasite originates from contaminated items and surfaces that have been tainted by the feces of an infected person or animal.

The reason why the late middle ages is considered so dark or not a good time to live in the middle ages is because of the Black Death. The black death is the worst catastrophe besides the children’s crusade. The black death killed millions of people, and there was so many dumb and pretty weird ideas for helping and getting rid of the black death that almost nobody lived.

Treatments and theories about the causes of the plague were prevalent in many aspects of life. Initially many believed plagues to be the result of evil spirits. For this reason, people would often huddle together to keep the spirits away.
The disease spread from nation to nation, killing millions of people and seriously affecting their lives especially Britain. It is thought to be one of the most devastating plagues in human history. It is thought to have begun in the mid 1340’s in China, caused by dirty rodents who had infected fleas. The fleas travelled through Asia and lived on Rats and all sorts of other creatures. Some of these creatures became passengers on merchant ships that sailed to Europe.
