How to Prepare for Hurricanes Think about the photos that kept all those wonderful memories alive hanging on your wall, your first trophy, your favorite music album, and the keepsakes handed down through the generations that make you and the ones you love feel connected. “All it takes is one hurricane, and the things you love, the comfortable, secure lifestyle you have worked so hard to create and maintain, is gone” (Greenwald). It is up to you to buy a generator or just have flashlights instead and extra batteries in case you need them. During a hurricane warning, listen constantly to a battery radio to hear the weather station and know where the storm is located. Have a plan with your family to get together at a place when the storm is hitting so they could know where to go in case they are asleep. Check that the shelter where you are going to remain during the storm is safe enough and that it has all the first aid kits, food, and water needed in case of critical stage. If the power shuts down, turn off major appliances to reduce power when lights is restored. Have a flash light close by and do not use candles or oil lamp as a source of light, it can be dangerous.
