Improving Public Safety in the United States On Friday, December 14th, six employees and 20 children were gunned down at Sandy Hook Elementary School in the small town of Newtown. This is merely one of the countless massacres that have taken place in the United States. Each time, topics about gun control were discussed. Gun control has been one of the most controversial issues in the United States. In 1994, Clinton enforced his version of gun control by banning assault rifles. After revisiting the constitution and realizing the effects of gun control from American history, I believe a better solution in preventing mass murders is not gun control but rather enhancing public safety and refining background checks. We need to implement better public safety, for example; arming mall cops, hiring more resource officers in schools and better equipping those officers to react. We also have poor measures in place in terms of background checks. It is too easy to purchase a firearm since it only requires a basic criminal background check, and the status quo even allows the purchase of firearms at gun shows without one. Closing this gap could ensure that guns don’t fall into the wrong hands. We also need to broaden background checks and analyze more than just criminal history. After Newtown, government must enact legislation to strengthen public safety rather than jeopardize it by violating the Second Amendment. It worries me that people believe in banning assault weapons to solve gun violence, especially when history has told us otherwise.
