Depression in college is a major issue for many students, particularly freshmen. This is due to the fact that many of these students are living away from home for the first time. Other factors include stress due to an increased academic load, financial difficulties, and a variety of other changes. These students are in a situation where they are around new people and, possibly, in a new location. In some situations, this can create a lonely environment for the student, causing many depression symptoms to develop. As such, college freshman, in particular, need to know different ways of fighting depression. Exercise Exercise is a highly effective way of fighting depression symptoms. The chemicals released as a result of exercise often counteract the symptoms allowing the sufferer to feel relief. Furthermore, if the student exercises on a regular basis, he or she begins a schedule. Schedules are often effective in treatment of depression symptoms because they allow for organization of the day. Exercise helps to improve the student’s physical health. Many depression symptoms can be alleviated through the improvement of health. In fact, some depression symptoms are caused by health issues. Finally, exercise often permits the student to be outside. Being outside is an important part of treatment for depression symptoms and the prevention of recurrence. Sunlight Sunlight contains Vitamin D. This vitamin is essential to treat depression symptoms. Thus, through the acquisition of Vitamin D, the student increases his or her serotonin within the brain. Serotonin is a chemical in the brain that is a natural antidepressant. As a result, sunlight is one of the most effective ways of treating depression symptoms, as well as one of the cheapest ways.
