Thus, these political, economic and social factors all contributed to the reasons why the Articles of Confederation couldn’t provide an effective form of government. Firstly for the economic reason, The Articles of Confederation failed to provide a solid money system to ensure that taxes would be paid or to protect commerce. Congress had no way to collect taxes to pay off pre-war debts. This led to chaos and anarchy when soldiers that hadn't been paid marched on Philadelphia, and Congress had to flee to Princeton New Jersey showed in the Letter from delegate Joseph Jones of Virginia to George Washington on Feb 27th,1783
When the founding fathers of the Constitution tried to think of a way to elect a president, many different ideas were considered. One of the ideas was to have Congress choose the president. That idea was later shot down because it was thought possible corruption and political bargaining to help benefit a few people trying to advance their political careers and not caring about the well being of the country. Another idea that was thought of was a direct popular vote, where the candidate with the most votes wins. Because of the vast size of the country at the time and the severe lack of technology, trying to count votes and have news of what each candidate stood for in all parts of the country,
The Age of democracy is a response or answer to the Age of Absolutism by the new ideas that spread throughout the world. Although democracy and absolutism had advantages and disadvantages, democracy was a more effective type of government for it limited royal power and protected the rights of the people socially, politically, and economically. Throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, tension arose between the two different types of governments, the democracy and absolute monarchs. During the Age of Absolutism there were many different views on how to run a monarchy. There were so many different monarchs at the time; they all had different ways of running their perspective courts.
Throughout the course of history, different viewpoints were presented and brought to major conflicts. Similar to the conflicting views of the Colonies and the British Parliament, the federalists and the Jeffersonian Republicans both contradict each other concerning in domestic and foreign policies. Policies such as the Alien and Sedition acts of 1798, Strong/ Weak federal government, the importance of manufacturing/ agriculture, etc were compelling factors that drove the government into two parties. While the opposing sides had disagreements, their common goal was to provide equal rights for citizens. However, due to the methods presented for American success, each party contradicted their opinions on the common man, democracy, and the constitution which foreshadows a great unstable nation.
He believed in “Life, Liberty, and Property.” One of the main framers that John Locke influenced majorly was a classical liberal and that was Thomas Jefferson. (Stephenson 119) Jefferson once states, “Our liberty depends upon the freedom of the press.” He played a big role in the creation of the Bill of Rights, which are all about equality and being liberal. He was the one who contacted Madison and told him to ratify the constitution because it lacked a bill of rights and the failure to provide for rotation in office. James Madison was the father of the Constitution and drafted the Bill Of Rights, which is all about equality. To make the people feel equally powered with the government and Madison was a liberal.
44) The Articles of Confederation weren’t very successful, they failed for several reasons. The main reason was that “the national government had no way of collecting any revenue from the states or from states’ citizens”. (p.44) After the Articles weren’t much success the constitutional convention came along. In 1787, 55 delegates from all the states got together in Philadelphia to propose changes to the Articles of Confederation. The constitutional convention started a very long process that involved a lot of compromises that helped set the constitution the way it is now.
America is not a set idea or definition, but is a combination of many diverse people and their cultures. The basis of this country is identified through its diversity and the freedom in which every person posses. People come to this country to develop a better life for themselves and in hopes of one day achieving the “American Dream.” America is not only a country, but also an idea that is one of the most prevalent in out world. America as a country consists of many parts that all fit together as one. One of the first parts that actually make a country a country are the people that make it up.
The American Revolution did not satisfy the colonial goals for civil, political, social, and economic rights; however the Constitution did. All the American Revolution did was drive the British out of America. With the British gone the Americans had the ability to strive for civil, political, social, and economic rights, but the Articles of Confederation became an obstacle in their path to their rightful goals. During the American Revolution the American people wrote a lot about what they wanted to accomplish and attain. In Document A, the Declaration of the Causes and Necessities of Taking Up Arms, it is written that the American people feel they have been wronged by England because their rights are restricted and wish for these basic rights to happiness and such.
Even inside the borders of our great nation, the Constitution shows that it’s still relevant to the American society. For example, the 27th amendment says that Congressmen and women can’t raise their salary while in office. If this amendment weren’t in place, then our debt wouldn’t be to China; instead it would be to the Congressional Officers of the United State government. Now to reference into foreign countries again; in some countries like South Africa, the right of women’s and colored person’s suffrage isn’t allowed. In other countries like Libya the right to vote is granted to no one because they are either under a dictatorship or the entire country is in mass chaos.
America’s Rise to World Dominance This chapter of American history states a very important turning point in American government and power not of its own nation but over nations oceans away. This made a a clear representation of American force not ‘to’ but ‘over’ others that are not Anglo-Saxon or have something that America simply demands. Reading this today, subjectively, I understand this to be an unruly act of oppression, more surprisingly from a nation that understood what it meant to be oppressed yet imposed imposed it over others seemingly without mercy. In the textbook it notes that many people opposing such imperialism had a strong foothold in the politics but in the end they simply did not have enough people to support the claim
