Have you ever thought about whether you’re a good person? Yes? So tell me, what makes a good person? Is it a good job, like doctor or is it money? In Nick Hornby’s novel “How to be Good” the character Katie Carr tries to find an answer to these questions. The novel was written and published in 2001 and is, as many books of Nick Hornby, a bestseller. Katie Carr is married to David, an angry, swelling newspaper editor. They have two children, Tom and Molly. But Katie is desperate. She wants a divorce, she slept with another man. But one day everything changes when David gets to know DJ GoodNews. And suddenly he turns to get good! They take children from the street into their house, they want to build “...and ideal world in [their] own home”, the children have to donate their toys and so on Katie is desperate. She doesn’t like the way David changed. Has their marriage any future? “How to be Good” is a wonderful novel about the problems of a family. It deals with philosophical questions like “What’s good? What’s bad? What’s the ideal world?” It doesn’t really give answers, but it definitely says that you should take care of yourself and your family before helping all the others. Of course there are people who need help, but you can’t sacrifice your own family, the people you love. At least I wouldn’t do that. Nick Hornby’s novel “How to be Good” is not just about how to be good, but also about how hard it is to be. I totally recommend the book, because you can identify yourself with the characters very good and it’s easy to follow their thoughts. So if you’ve got the chance to read it, do so! It won’t be a wasted
