Ben Burgess September 17, 2013 ENC 1101 Monday-Wednesday, 11:00-12:15 Process Essay How to Be an Effective Writer Have you ever had an idea for a story or an essay, but you weren’t sure how you were going to communicate said idea to a potential reader? Writing can be a grind, a mountain that you’re constantly trying to climb to the top of. Sometimes, you can’t summon the energy to focus on that novel you’ve been composing or that 50-point essay you need to complete in a week’s time. Maybe you’re thirsting for inspiration. Trust me, I know. I’ve done my share of procrastinating with regards to writing. However, my skills have matured from a caterpillar to a butterfly over the years, and I’m here to say that you can be a butterfly, too. If you are knowledgeable about your topic, can communicate said topic in a clear and definitive manner, and can value quality over quantity, you can become an effective writer. Primarily, knowing what you’re writing about is a must. A clear idea is a good idea. An effective writer has to have advanced knowledge of the subject matter before they just put it on a piece of scratch paper. Oratory has a similar process. If you are addressing a team of physicists, but you don’t know gravity from relativity, chances are you’re going to disappoint those highly intelligent people in the room, leave them wanting more. If you are speaking to a bunch of strangers, they may not fully understand what you’re trying to communicate. Thus, your message is less effective. However, if, you are reciting your work to a group of your peers, people you can relate to, and your thesis is clear as day with commonalties that the audience can identify with, then your rhetoric has proven to be enlightening.
