this makes us question how trustable are news media really if all they want is ad money? Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel worry that “the public sphere” has become an arena solely for polarized debate, not for compromise, consensus and solution” Stewart - problem solving is harder because of news media influence Culture and the Evolution of Mass Communication Culture can be viewed more broadly as the ways in which people live and represent themselves at particular historical times Communication: the creation and use of symbol systems that convey information and meaning Culture: the symbols of expression that individuals, groups, and societies use to make sense of daily life and to articulate their values a process that delivers the values of a society through products or other meaning-making forms rugged individualism Mass Media: cultural industries - the channels of communication - that produce and distribute songs, novels, tv shows, news papers, movies, video games, internet services, and other cultural products to a large number of people Convergence: several overlapping phases or eras in which newer forms of technology disrupted and modified older forms Eras of convergence: oral, written, print, electronic, and digital Oral and Written refer to the communication of tribal or feudal communities and
This way there is a lack of identity, as at the end of the day we are just an order of numbers. So unless you are famous to the world modern identity is mostly found in tightly knit communities. This is because there are less people and everyone is known by a feature, e.g. ‘oh the lady with the Dalmatian who lives opposite Mary’. But now people are much more interested in social media, people will make their identity to how they want to be viewed.
While some people might not agree with the idea that the Internet is diminishing our intelligence. We’re provided with evidence from a few of Carr’s acquaintances who say that the more they use the Web, the more they have to stay focused on long pieces of writings. These statements make sense, due to the fact that our society has become all about immediacy and less about patience. While I’m an avid user of technology, ranging from the latest MacBook to the next iPhone, I have to agree with Carr’s claim that technology is indeed diminishing our intelligence. A few months ago I was showing my Grandmother the different shortcuts my MacBook offered, such as swiping three fingers up displayed all the open windows, swiping two fingers back loaded the previous Internet page, and she was amazed by the simplicity my
Bias is an opinion about whether a person, group, etc, it`s always subjective. The situation we have today with mass media is that all the news are biased instead of being objective. Media bias is the bias of journalists and news producers within the mass media in the selection of events and stories that are reported and how they are covered. The oldest bias in news is political bias. Political bias has been a feature of the mass media since its birth following the invention of the printing press.
Media landscape became more complicated, and the introduction of cable, satellite and the Internet to society needed to be incorporated into legislature which became a new potential opportunity for media convergence. Furthermore, changes in the media market were another central cause of the proposed amendments. After the demobilization of AT&T, an industry giant in American telecommunications, other companies in the industry had a strong desire to proceed as companies, as opposed to public utilities. The need for change in legislature with regards to telecommunications was also aroused by trends of deregulation in government policy, which can be attributed to Carter's Administration. Although, the disbandment of AT&T and the beginning of long distance competition occurred under Reagan's government, most of the work in telecommunication deregulation was under Jimmy
Carr explains that the internet changed the way reading works dramatically. Now articles are cluttered with advertisements, links, and other things that can distract the reader from the document. Carr then illustrates that sources of entertainment outside the internet have been changed since the installment of the internet as well. Advertisements are now scattered across television shows more than ever. Carr then explains that the mission of Google’s leaders is to make all the information known to man easily accessible through the internet.
Reactions, feedback, conversations and debates are generated online as well as support and participation for offline events. Messages posted to personal networks are multiplied when shared, which allow new audiences to be reached. Although the presence of social media is spreading and media use patterns are changing, online political engagement is largely restricted to people already active in politics and on the Internet. Other audiences are less responsive. For example, television news together with print and online newspapers are still the most important sources of political information in most countries.
This Is Your Brain on the Internet The brain is one of the most fascinating organs in the human body. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the brain is a social organ. It reacts to environment around us, and these reactions subconscious or not can have an effect on our brain. One question that is being asked more and more regarding this is that is the internet making us dumb. Even though the internet is not a brand new thing, this question was never brought up because of how slow it used to be and because of how many people had access to it compared to now.
Text does not convey emotions very well. You now have to assume what the expression and the pitch in a person’s voice are. It is very hard to tell if one is mad or sad or just being happy unless they are being very descriptive on how they feel. Many people can pretend to be a certain way as well. Anonymity on the internet is easy.
I personally don’t use the internet much, but when I have used it I found it to be useful. Somehow I;ve managed to get by without having to use it much. I understand there are many different reasons for using the internet and I am not saying it either good or bad, but I do feel that some of its uses are really ridiculous, like
