Throughout the novel How Not to be Popular by Jennifer Ziegler there has been a big change in the high school Lakewood High. As Maggie’s popularity skyrockets, the school seems to go through change a change in atmosphere. The most prominent changes that Lakewood High is experiencing are the most popular kids are being pushed to the bottom of the totem pole, and the students that weren’t so popular are now taking on a popular leaf. Before Maggie arrived we can assume that Lakewood high already had their popularity ranks given to them, because when she states how the kids sit around in their selective groups outside. By the time we get to chapter 13, the students have begun to mix with each other; talking to people they would have not otherwise spoken to. Before Maggie came to Lakewood the Bippies were the leading ladies at Lakewood. This was because most people were afraid of them. The author made the Buppies diction very significant because they were the top tier of the popularity rank. However when Maggie came there was a different type of imagery she portrayed which made the reader assume she was trying to hard to be noticed, but she was really trying to avoid being seen. Maggie’s clothing represented her character. It was very awkward and distasteful, but it made want to stare at her with disgust and amazement for being so bold. That is why the unpopular people were trying to be like her which pushed the Bippies to be bottom because they were not. The author created Maggie’s to be the red spot on white paper. She made the story change from the typical high school story; to an anyone can be popular story.
