How is tension conveyed through the character of Dr. Roylott? Sherlock Holmes is a fictional London based detective, who seems to have a sixth sense for solving crimes. He appeared in over 56 short stories and 4 novels. He was incredibly popular with readers. The author, Conan Doyle once tried to kill the character off but due to public outrage, he was resurrected. From a collection of twelve short stories, the speckled band was popular in the 1890’s. It is a mystery story, in which Holmes must detect the cause of Julia stoner’s mysterious death, and hopefully save the life of her sister, Helen stone. Throughout the story, the sisters stepfather, Dr Roylott is a suspect. Conan Doyle uses this character to convey tension and suspense in a variety of methods. Dr Roylott is a quite intelligent man and is capable of doing anything to anybody as long as luck was on his side, which obviously he didn’t have when it came down to his last effort to kill Helen Stoner. Her fear of that in the end she travels to see Sherlock Holmes to see how her sister, Julia stoner was killed in fear of her own life. She had ‘frightened eyes like those of some hunted animals’ this shows that she might not come out publicly that she fears for her life. The stress and the pressure from Dr Roylott is making her hair ‘premature grey’ this shows that her body is ageing a lot more rapidly than her as a person is because she is thinking that all of the bad things that happened to her sister may well happen to her. Helen doesn’t know that Dr Roylott killed Julia but something makes her very suspicious as there are a lot of strange occurrences. Despite Dr Roylott effectively being a genius he used his intelligence to make evil plans against Helen and Julia which originally works for the death of Julia. However it comes back around to the cost of his life. He was a very intimidating man
