How Far do you Agree that the Period 1900-1914 were Decades of Disappointment for black Americans? There was a lot of change in this period of time in four ways in particularly. These are society, economically and politically. Was it though however, a period of change for the worse, or for the better? First, socially. This period was a massive time where the sense of community increased greatly due to all of the opposition; black people were more united than ever. Segregation was the norm for African Americans in the 1900s. In the south everything was segregated, including transport, parks churches, beaches, schools and even theatres. This was to stop the two races from mixing and to prevent the dilution of the African Americans into the white culture and their everyday lives. This however doesn’t mean that this was necessarily a time of disappointment for the African Americans. This is because they were used to this treatment and much worse, so this segregation would not have been anything new; thus meaning there was no disappointment other than the fact that there had been no improvement. The north also was extremely segregated, no better than the south. They weren’t allowed to live near white people in the cities so they lived in ghettos, completely segregated from the rest of the world. The prices were also through the roof for houses and flats for African Americans. All of these things would have been normal but would still have been even more disappointing in the south. This is because of the great migration. The black people moved from the south for a better life in the north and when they got there they found that the treatment was not up to the standard they had imagined. This would have been a massive disappointment! They had moved their families and belongings just to have a better quality of life and found that it was just as bad. So in the north
