A VIEW On schizophrenia Stephanie Torres Center for allied health College writing June 23, 2013 Abstract This Apa paper is a view on schizophrenia, it discusses the cause, treatments, symptoms as well as how this illness affects a persons daily life. Further more this paper addresses how society views this mental disorder. Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe disabling brain disorder. Like many medications it has adverse affects but people must take medication for life. Besides medications schizophrenics’ also need support such as psychosocial therapy. And family support not only for emotional support but to ensure treatment compliance to avoid hospital or relapse in symptoms. According to smith,(2013) Living with family can be a good option for people with schizophrenia if there family members understand the illness well on the other hand its not recommended for a person with schizophrenia to live in a home with a single, ill, or frightened children this can have a negative impact on the family. Therefore families are encouraged to place there loved ones in a residential home, so that way not only does it take the burden off the family; but the person can be in in a structural environment with 24 hour supervision to monitor compliance and decrease…show more content…
Myth:” People with schizophrenia are violent“, “People with schizophrenia are not usually violent. In fact, most violent crimes are not committed by people with schizophrenia” NIMH,(2009) on the other hand people with schizophrenia have a higher suicide rate and are more likely to commit suicide then committing an act of violence. NIMH,(2009) Ten percent die from suicide, especially men. Schizophrenics’ tend to be violent inside there own home not in public. Smith & Segal, (2012) Myth : Schizophrenia refers to a "split personality" or multiple personalities. Fact: Multiple personality disorder is a different and much less common disorder than schizophrenia. People with schizophrenia do not have split personalities. Rather, they are “split off” from reality. Myth: People with schizophrenia can’t be helped. Fact: While long-term treatment may be required, the outlook for schizophrenia is not hopeless. When treated properly, many people with schizophrenia are able to enjoy life and function within their families and
