Kylie Binns Dr. Dovel Botany 23 November 2009 How did life on earth originate? The age old question: How did life on earth originate? This topic has been highly debated for centuries. As we have tried to answer this question through means of studies and experiments, there has been a division in theory to how life has originated. There are multiple theories on how life originated on earth. These theories are separated into three main groups, each having multiple positions on that specific theory. The three theories include Evolutionism, Creationism, and Intelligent Design. Before starting my research on these theories I thought I had my viewpoint set in stone, but as I was doing research on these three theories I realized that each theory has a good argument and they all could be somewhat possible. Throughout my research my viewpoint has changed drastically on how I believe life originated (macro-evolution), micro-evolution, and the age of earth. The first subject that I researched was macro-evolution, which is defined as evolution that results in large scale changes such as species formation, and how each theory explained the origination of life on earth. Creationism and Intelligent Design are closely related because they believe in a higher power being the ultimate Creator of life on earth. They differ because Creationism believes that God was the higher power that created the life on earth, and Intelligent Design believes that some higher power created life on the earth, but it was not specifically God. Evolutionism on the other hand believes that there was no higher power involved in the creation of the earth, they believe in descent with modification, a term which was created by Charles Darwin (the first man to create this theory of evolution). Decent with modification means that there is a change in genetic material of a
