Monica Reis EGL-311 Controversy Concerning Cyber Bullying In the 21st century cyber bullying has become a part of our everyday lives. It is deliberating harming an individual or group of individuals through information and computer technologies. This fast growing trend has some experts believing it to be more detrimental than typical school yard bullying; because of the “24/7” access society has with the internet. (Webster, Chris, 2007). A recent studied stated that approximately half of teenagers who are either in middle school or high school have been bullied through at least one source of electronic technology.
Statistics show that 60% of teenagers are exposed to some sort of cyber bulling. I would like to quote a terrible incident that my neighbour was a target of serious emotional abuse where she put her home details online and she became of a serious assault and robbery. This has a psychological effect on young people. There are many different psychological problems that children could got through if they have been bullied physically or online things like a lack of confidence or them not wanting to socialize or worst case scenario suicide could occur, there has been a recent case of a girl called Amanda Todd who was bullied in her school and that made her change schools just to receive the same abuse this.
Bullying can now lead to criminal cases and lawsuits. By the schools letting bullying continue it teaches students that it's ok. This creates a fearful environment instead of a learning one. Students feel "let me bully so I don't get bullied". Bullying victims can have a lot of stress added on and it can lead to retaliation such as school shootings as well as suicide.
A major total of 71 percent of children have reported that bullying is a problem at their school and 15 percent of all school absentees are directly related to bullying. Every month 282,000 secondary school students are physically attacked. “Bullycide” remains to be the leading cause of deaths of children 14 years of age and younger, while the numbers remain low they are indeed “creeping up”. Suicide rates among 10-14 year olds have increased by 50 percent in the past three decades and in 2005 270 ten to four-teen year old children killed themselves due to bullying, most by hanging. All of these statistics are too high and most are escalating every day, society has to put an end to this trend and
Young people who are bullied are more likely to skip school or completely drop out. Statistics show that 60 percent of boys who were bullies in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by the time they were 24. They have made an Anti-Bullying law that will allow teachers and students to anonymously report perceived incidents of improper behavior. A majority of teachers and school administrators do not take this law
Examples are instant messaging, text messaging, blog, emails, etc. cyber bullying through proxy is when the bully gets someone else to do their dirty work. Cyber bullying by proxy is consider the most dangerous type do cyber bullying because adults often get involved and majority of the time the adults are unaware that they are bullying a child. Statistics says that nearly 46% of kids have been bullied online. 70% of students report seeing bullying online.
Intimidation is when a bully threatens someone in to doing what they want and last but not least is cyber bullying, which is close to being the most common, is done by sending messages, pictures, or information using an electronic source such as computer or cell phones. With the amount of different ways to bully someone it has reached to the point of an epidemic. In addition there are also characteristic qualities of a bully.
