Horror Movies and their Effects on us We’ve all heard about horror movies or even watched some in our lives, but why do we do so? When we actually think about it, it seems ridiculous to pay money so we can frighten ourselves and even be disgusted by what we are watching. Three well known authors wrote about this strange way to torture ourselves. In this explanatory essay we will be covering three diverse aspects of essays written by three different authors, Stanley J. Solomon, Stephen King and Tim Dirks, on horror movies. I will be explaining the setting and motifs of horror films, clarifying what are horror movies and how do they affect us. Stanley Solomon, Stephen King and Tim Dirks each wrote their own essays on horror films and how these films always have a the same type of setting and motifs. These 3 authors have totally different perspectives about horror movies, but on the other hand they also have similarities. Dirks describe the setting by giving the example of, “spooky old mansion, fog-shrouded and dark locals” (650). Basically the setting of the horror movie is always in an obscure area where most of the times the story will be happening in an isolated place (house, mansion or even village).This is where a group of people reunite themselves for a little party and since this group is separated from the urban city it is easy for the killer or monster to trap each individual without any neighbor doubting on what is actually happening. Now this brings us up to the motif of the horror movie. We know that the setting is always the same in any horror movies, but there is not only the setting that is repeated over and over again. In fact Dirks and Solomon describes in their essay, what they think is the motif of a horror movie.
