Final Draft “Andy crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to” (Frank Darabont). Coming out of the tunnel Andy looked up at the raining sky and put his hands out like it was the first time he had ever seen rain, or freedom. The Shawshank Redemption by Frank Darabont shows how hope is needed throughout the world in times of need. This essay will begin by discussing several scholars’ views of The Shawshank Redemption. It will then show, through views of my own, how hope helps a man when nothing else remains. This essay argues that in The Shawshank Redemption the human mind needs hope to stay sane, for without hope, there is no future. The Shawshank Redemption starts with a shot of a house at night. Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is in his car outside the house reaching for a gun in his glove box. Then it cuts to being questioned in a courtroom. He is on trial for the murder of his wife and her lover. Andy is sentenced to two life sentences for the murders. It is now Red (Morgan Freeman) in front of a prison council trying to get parole. He is denied the request. Red then leaves the council and walks out to the prison yard when the siren goes off telling the inmates new prisoners are about to arrive. Some of the inmates make bets as to which of the new inmates will breakdown and cry first. It is now night and the other inmates are trying to make the newbie cry to win the bet. Heywood (William Sadler) makes the fat guy cry first and so he is the winner. The fat guy doesn’t shut up so Officer Hadley (Clancy Brown) beats him and sends him to the infirmary. As they are eating an inmate lets Heywood know that the fat guy died from being beat by Hadley. After a month Andy asks Red if he can get him a rock hammer for carving rocks. It then cuts to Andy working in the laundry room. He goes to get
