Homosexuality in Islam Homosexuality in Islam is not something that emerged in the Modern World it has been present in Muslim societies for centuries. Although Islamic Law has a definite stance on the issue of homosexuality, there were different opinions on this matter throughout Islamic history in the present as well as the past, and opinions on this matter have been evolving throughout centuries. Every legal matter decided on Islam is based on the Quran which is the Muslim sacred text and the Hadith which are the sayings of Muhammad the Muslim prophet, these are the primary sources that are authoritative in Islam and it is upon them that the Shariah Law or better known as Islamic law is based on. In the Quran homosexuals were addressed as the people of Lot who lived in ancient times and were destroyed by God for their homosexual behaviour by doing so they have transgressed the limits set by the Lord. . “How can you lust for males, of all creatures in the world, and leave those whom God has created for you as your mates? You are really going beyond all limits” (Qur’an 26:165-166) (N. Kligerman 53). From this verse the Quran clearly states that homosexuality is a sin and God orders males to be with females.The Hadith also agrees with the Quran on this topic as the Muslim prophet has mentioned that homosexuality is a sin and God will punish the person who commits this sin in the day of judgement. He also prohibited anal sex whether it is done in a homosexual or heterosexual relationship and said that Muslim men and women should be chaste and not look at each other’s private parts and to abstain from doing that within the same sex (N. Kligerman 54). Islam considers homosexual acts to be sinful as well as a crime that should be punishable by law.
