There are an estimated 1.6 to 2.8 million homeless youth between the ages of 12 and 24 in the United States. Most youth homelessness is caused by abuse, neglect, and family conflict, deficient school systems that perpetuate illiteracy, joblessness, and addiction, lack of government housing and lack of affordable housing. These are not the only reasons why people are homeless, but they are the most obvious ones. Homelessness is viewed as a sociological problem, meaning that it is an issue that the society has to deal with by developing some kind of social institution and set of social practices like allocation of resources, and the allocation of status. Why are young people choosing to risk everything in order to leave home and live on the streets, and how are they handling the street life? Wendy on one hand decides to leave her home, and travel to Alaska to get a job. By doing this, Wendy is taking a risk by leaving home with little money and nowhere to stay, besides in her car. Although she is taking a risk by leaving home, she has goals; therefore it becomes a calculated risk. Wendy chose to be homeless, but she does not portray the life of a typical homeless person. It is not obvious that she does not have a home because, even though she is considered to be homeless, she handles her homelessness in a responsible way. She does not beg for money, in fact, she has her own money saved up to use responsibly. She takes care of her hygiene and bathes in a Shell gas station bathroom daily. She also does not literally sleep on the streets like the gutter punks. She sleeps in her car during the night then proceeds on her trip to Alaska to find a job, in hopes for a better life, a life as a real citizen. Homelessness has been dealt with by the development of social institutions and set of social practices like allocation of resources, and the allocation of status. Homelessness is not the governments fault entirely. Although the government appears to alienate the homeless population by cutting its investment in affordable housing nationally, they do provide city shelters with tools to help the homeless. In reality, the causes of homelessness are without a doubt, a matter of bad luck, personal problems, addiction, and choice. Life is rough and sometimes things do not work out, but as an individual, everyone is responsible for their life outcomes and focusing all causes of homelessness on the government is completely unrealistic. This country allows us to make our own decisions and the government gives us the right tools and resources to benefit us even at our lowest
