Homelessness: A Huge Problem In My Community Homelessness is a social problem that my community suffers from. It is the condition of people who lack regular access to housing. This is caused by many factors such as, mental illness, drug abuse, sexual and physical abuse, loss of job, or lack of basic education just to name a few. People with complex life issues related to mental illness and drug abuse are the most common people who find themselves homeless due to the fact that they are unable to secure a steady job therefore making it impossible to pay rent. Another reason that could lead to being homeless is that these people may have been subjected to either physical or mental abuse. Maybe they were subjected to both. This abuse may come from their own families, homes, possibly even their parents. Sadly most of these victims are teens and women so their only escape is to leave home and seek “relief” in the streets where they feel they can be free. Finally, the most important reason we have such a huge homeless problem could be do to the limited availability of low income housing. Lack of low income housing shows us why there are so many homeless people in my community. There are those that work but who just are not able to afford the costs associated with renting or owning a “regular” place of dwelling. Another factor in so many people becoming homeless could be the high unemployment rate and high rate of companies laying off workers. Without an income one is unable to pay living expenses therefore they end up living in the street and these causes cannot be prevented. In conclusion, being homeless is a growing issue which requires government intervention to overcome this ever growing problem. Local or State government needs to build more low income units instead of these high priced condominium units. Government also needs to better protect women and
