Home Alone is a story of an eight-year-old boy who is accidentally left behind at his upscale house in the Chicago suburbs while the rest of his family flies to France for Christmas, forcing him to have to fend for himself when he comes into contact with two burglars who are particularly interested in his house. The film is filled with “jolly” music featuring sleigh bells, chimes, and other holiday spirited sounds along with some mildly dark music to represent the burglars. Home Alone is a perfect example of a film and a score fitting like a perfect glove for a hand, with the music balancing the two sides of the film: wacky comedy and family and religion during the holidays. Composed by John Williams, the score is definitely Christmas themed. The film combines the score and Williams’ two original songs with traditional but rerecorded Christmas carol recordings. The Oscar-nominated primary song of the film, “Somewhere in My Memory” is an enchanting new Christmas carol for chorus and orchestra. It is a beautiful sound that reflects happiness and light of the holidays. It maintains a jingly, wondrous theme and includes a children’s choir, which suggests a heartfelt innocence and ironic wonder of Christmas, and sleigh bells, and it really allows the listeners to picture themselves surrounded with family while snow is falling during the holiday season. The cue begins with a twinkling statement of the songs theme, emoted as a pair of descending minor thirds, carried by synthetic chimes, celeste, xylophone, and glockenspiel. The theme transfers first to woodwinds, then to horns and strings before the children’s chorus enters. The pretty spirit and strength of “Somewhere in My Memory” further represents Kevin’s love for his parents.
