It helps people to live as well as possible while they manage their illness. Palliative care concentrates on maintaining quality of life by controlling physical symptoms, such as pain or sickness. It also looks at the emotional, social or spiritual needs that people may have. It supports both the person who is dying and their carers and family. Nurses provide education that will assist clients to understand, comply with cancer management regimens; and cope with the effects of cancer and related treatment.
It’s important to observe mental status changes and functional status changes, this can determine how well the patient can take care of themselves and deal with their health promotion on their own. Altered cognition is not a normal part of aging and the nurse may need to pay close attention to the possibilities of the onset of dementia. Activities of daily living include everything we do during our normal day to properly take care of ourselves and as we get older these tasks may become more difficult. Nurses need to assess how well a patient can see or hear, vision and hearing loss can be quite debilitating to performing ADL’s and it’s the nurses job to make sure our patient is in a safe environment and that they have proper vision/hearing care with proper strength prescriptions for their glasses or hearing assessments. It is very important to remember that hearing and vision loss is normal with aging and that when we perform our assessments we should talk slowly and annunciate clearly so the patient can understand any direction or education that is given (GCU, 2012).
The use of these indicators could have assisted the nurses in several ways involving this case. The knowledge of pressure ulcers prevalence could have helped the nurse and CNA to prevent the patient from forming a pressure ulcer. They should have recognized that the reddened area was the beginning of a pressure ulcer, and they should have known to reposition the patient every two hours to prevent him from developing a pressure ulcer. The RN and CNA should both have a better understanding of when it is appropriate to use restraints and how to manage a restrained patient. Patients should be given frequent breaks from the restraints,
For example when a nurse sees that its patients exercise and watch his or her diet in order to lower its blood pressure or cholesterol the nurse should reward them by making a positive comment to them. In addition a good nurse should take their time to review its patient’s health history and their present history in regular bases. A good nurse will take some extra time to research about some health condition that its patient is going though. And a good nurse will keep in touch with its patient’s family and inform them about the patient’s health in regular bases if it’s ok with the patient. Finally a good nurse will respect its patient’s situation and have patience while he or she is in process of recovering.
Personal qualities should be required as well to become a respiratory therapist as well. One good personal quality would be to have good social skills, making of friendly environment. Another personal quality would be to work calmly in a medical emergency. A respiratory therapist must take every situation seriously as if they were all an emergency. They should be aware that patients could with hold important information, so they must follow good procedure.
I believe that providing the best possible care for each patient should be the primary concern of nursing. In doing so, the environment is crucial in the meeting the needs of the patient. Central concepts of nursing are “person, environment, health, and nursing” ( Masters, 2014, p.48).Careful consideration must be given in educating the patient about the illness. In early years, the responsibility fell upon the physician. In recent years, the responsibility has been transferred to the nurse to manage the patient’s environment in order to promote the patient’s recovery.
They must not only be concerned with patient’s and family members but they too must look at their employees and make sure they have a focus and the tools they need to reach the goals and provide safe, efficient, quality healthcare. They must be able to handle any ethical issues. There must be a focus point so that employees have a goal in site to reach for. Leadership is the backbone for nursing and healthcare providers. According to the writings of Shay (2008), numerous factors exist that specifically influence an individual’s ability to adhere to healthy behavior patterns. The subject matter for this analysis was chosen in regards to the nursing theorist, Nola Pender, and takes her theory of health promotion into account. This concept analysis cites several ideals that need to be in place, in order for an individual to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Exercise is another key component of maintaining a healthy self. Setting up exercise programs is essential for prevention of stroke and heart attacks which seems to have a correlation with increased dementia. We as health professionals have a responsibility to teach and assist people to maintain a lifestyle that will prevent some of the key factors which contribute to AD. Nurses and health care professionals are the first line to addressing these issues and assisting people to become aware of ways to keep and stay healthier during the golden years. Using the research that has been applied to best practice is the way that nurses can make a huge difference in their client’s lives.
