When caring for a patient with lung cancer it is necessary to encompass a holistic view of health to achieve the best quality of life for the patient and their family. To address the physical, social, psychological, spiritual and cultural aspects of health the appropriate health assessments must be conducted. After reading the initial case study it is evident that further assessment is essential if support and interventions are to be compatible with the patient’s current needs. Four key issues in particularly must be assessed as they are of vital importance to the maintaining the patient’s health and wellbeing. These issues are activities of daily living, irritable bowel syndrome, anticipatory grief and social support for the patient and family. Activities of daily living (ADL’s) are actions regularly completed in the course of a normal day; they include walking, eating, dressing, bathing, brushing the teeth and grooming (Crisp & Taylor, 2005, p. 339). Lung cancer can cause many symptoms that interfere with a patient’s ability to live as normal. In Clare’s case these symptoms may be shortness of breath, pain, coughing, loss of appetite, lack of energy, fatigue and other symptoms relating to brain and liver metastasis. The aim when caring for Clare is to eradicate or moderate symptoms that interfere with daily activities and provide the best quality of life possible (Extermann, 2003). By assessing the patient’s functional ability to perform ADL’s it is possible to substantiate the need for support with activities of daily living. Enquiry should be made regarding Clare’s ability to perform specific tasks, the degree of difficulty experienced when performing tasks and whether the patient has changed the way tasks are completed because of their condition (Guadagnoli & Mor, 1991).
