This essay will compare and contrast the different experiences of high school and college. One of the major differences between high school and college is the fact that high school is mandatory and in most instances free to attend. Because students are required to attend, they sometimes lack motivation. High school can be filled with hand holding from both the teachers and parents. Students have little say over what classes they will take and when they will take them, as most of the classes are pre-arranged.
Firstly, many students and adults do not know enough about managing their finances which is why they tend to get in to debt. If financial literacy is taught in high then they will not have problem managing their finances because they will have that knowledge. According to the studies almost eighty percent of the people in dept are in dept because they do not make a financial plan as they were never taught to. These people lack the financial literacy skills. This is why teaching financial literacy in high school will benefit the students later in their life.
In the article “What’s Wrong With Vocational School” written by Charles Murray, he gives his opinion about the unnecessary of four year college’s program compares to vocational training. I find this article have some very interesting ideas which I both agree and disagree I agree with his statement in the fourth paragraph about how many students attend college because their parents are paying for it and it is what they supposed to do after their finish high school. Many students do not have any real goals or any ideas of what they are going to do for their life, but going to a four year college is an obligation because their parents have spent so much money for them through high school, and now college. Automatically, their job is to do well in school and finish with a four year degree so that they can be prepared for their future without the supporting from their parents. This is a common sense that many of us all know as an adult; yet not all young people understand this fact.
I no longer had my mom enrolling me in school, it was all up to me. Picking classes and choosing what time I wanted to be in school was something I was definitely not used to, yet something I could get used to and like a whole lot better. The one factor of college that did kill me though was the fact that me, myself, and I were responsible for paying for everything. I never understood why everyone complained about textbooks until I took a look at the prices tags and saw ALL the books my professors required. Not only did my heart hurt, but so did my
Portfolio Task: Module 1 Effective Study Skills are the sole foundation for a solid education(540 words) Many academic students making the transition from normal studies and everyday life skills to studies for their chosen profession start to fall behind, this is because the study time increases along with independent working , this is due students not knowing how to approach the new demands (Gettinger & Seibert – 2002). In addition students do not know how to approach the new demands required for independent study.– Metacognition is the awareness of one’s own learning and thinking process, that enables each student to take responsibility for their learning, allowing them to set goals, self assess and implement, however the metacognition side is not taught in the early years. What a student perceives as study skills will depend on the individual, what is effective for one will not be for the other. Study skills are developed through frequent use and become a natural action; skilful reading develops by constant reading and writing by writing. As the mind becomes more fine tuned the student will realise they can apply more to analytical and critical thinking - “Constant practice and critical reflection is essential if the student wishes to succeed” (Cottrell, 2013 P66).
When George, Sam, and Rameck were in University High, they didn’t have teachers that were motivated. “We had a few dedicated teachers at the high school who pushed us to learn and forced us to do our work, but too many others just didn’t know how to reach us and didn’t seem to care” (59). The teachers don’t have the desire to help students or care, therefore, Sam, Rameck, and George's grades drop. This proved how important of a role teachers play on a student's academic life. If the teachers didn’t care about their education, how would you expect students to stay in school when the teachers don’t care whether they attend or not.
Many seek a higher education for employment purposes. There are a lot of people who are in classes only to achieve a raise or to get advancements in their jobs. Many students seem to think that they may only do the basic work in order to ‘skate by’. Professor X, in his article titled “In the Basement of the Ivory Tower”, seems to believe that many people attend college because they can; or they take classes based on the job market, not because they have a desire to learn. He is unhappy with the college system of today.
Their perspective on how the underachieved educational system is, alongside my encounters with complex of schooling. In high school, we are given many standards every day that we must meet in order to be considered successful, but the reality is; these standards are fruitless in expectation for colleges and universities. In high school I did not get the English composition skills, to prepare me for my college courses. They are right about their belief that the professors in the universities are very inspired in some ways to give their standards to the students in depth knowledge to set higher standards, however, it is not good to know that some high school students still enter Americas elite schools through remedial process, because it might agitate the worldwide standards set by the school
I guess I was blind to see how teachers have to teach and how they teach. Back in my day when I went to school teachers cared and tried to keep the students from not being bored and keep us engaged. Now that both my girls are in school. I think it’s bad for the teachers and the students cause all they have is test after test that last for weeks just to prove where our kids stand with the rest of the nation or in the county. There are very few computers for to many students. I believe that the solution to this problem will be to build more computer labs. In this way we can be able to do all assignment and school projects. Each semester, students have to deal with the fact to get textbooks for the classes that must be taken. This has become a real issue for many students because as the school library the textbooks are been sell at a very high cost that we cannot afford.
