FYS One main reason for his complex behavior was not living up to others expectations set for him because of “white liberals”. For instance most doctors that come to Haiti can’t handle the pressure that Farmer does not mind to deal with. Farmer said on page 40, “WL’s think that that world’s problems can be solved without any cost of themselves…There’s a lot to sacrifice, remorse, even pity….” He realized that also meant that he had to stop classifying himself as only an American but as a worldly activist for poverty, unstable government, and complete suffrage. He felt that his patients needed him more than the people in his life. He realize that his line of worked required a certain amount of attention. For example, he treated the people that worked for him entirely different as well. He would yell at them and make them stay longer than they had to, to help out at the hospital. He wasn’t getting paid any more different than the other employees and they were complaining about it. He is a man of many sides, and everyone seems to contradict the other. There is where we find the predicament with understanding Paul Farmer. He didn’t want to be another white liberal and prove people’s perception of him to be correct. Although the saying does go that “the greatest are misunderstood,” maybe he is not meant to be understood just do what he had to do and move to something different. He gave up his entire life for the people of Haiti, not many people can do that. He purposely formed an entirely different relationship with his patients than he did with those whom he knew were more privileged to have the life that those in Haiti don’t
