Andrew Salvatore 9/5/08 Essay #1 How to treat a Family Analysis of Mountains Beyond Mountains In Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, the main character Paul Farmer is a man on a mission to give Haiti the attention and healthcare needed to help their people survive. In Mountains Beyond Mountains, Paul is always at Haiti trying to cure someone, or do something good for a Haitian. The only problem with Paul Farmer being in Haiti is that Paul has a wife and a daughter that needs attention too. Farmer is a very selfish man by not seeing his family, and there is a way he could fix that. The first thing that I thought Farmer could have done to make his family feel more important is if Farmer didn’t go to Haiti as much as he did, but rather switch off weeks of when to go to Haiti and when to stay home with his family.
Many felt as if an individual had colored skin, he or she was worth less than an individual who was not colored which brought conflicts with education and social rankings and caused more criticism amongst society. With that, the hope for equality amongst all people, not just the non-colored people, was brought to life which became known as the American Dream. Not only did the American Dream serve as hope for equality, but also as a life lesson of not being judgmental. This lesson was taught to Nick Carraway by his father who once told him “whenever you feel like criticizing any one, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had” (Fitzgerald 1). Nick always carried around this advice and used it when he felt it necessary because he knew that if he held other people up to his own moral standards, he will misunderstand them.
Doctor Copeland goes around and helps many people living in his town, but usually the only people that he helps are blacks like himself. He seems upset throughout the entire book because he cannot gain the respect of the white people even though he feels that he is an active and important member of society. He is also upset at his children, for whom he worked so hard for to keep them from falling into the “normal” life of a black person. Regardless of Doctor Copeland’s social preferences and adversity he faced to give them the life they had, they all work at demeaning jobs that a white person would not work unless they were extremely desperate. He illustrates this frustration when he gives a speech to a group of colored people around Christmas.
And indeed i don't know wether he had been a pauper all his life. He had given me some reason to infer that it was his impatience of comparative poverty that drove him out there (Conrad, 114). Kurtz’s original reason for the quest was for his fiancés family to respect his status and approve of their relationship. This is what initially evoked his ambition to acquire the job as an ivory hunter in the Congo, however by the end of the novel, this is the least of his concerns. As Kurtz spent more time in the Congo River, his goals shifted from the sole purpose of proving his worth to his intended family, to creating his own kingdom.
Employees are going to be happier and work harder toward company goals when they have a supervisor who shows them they are a valuable asset to the company. When they are treated as “Roary” treats his employees they will get to the point where they do not care about company goals, are absolutely miserable at work and have to walk on eggshells so as not to pull the wrath of “Roary” down on
This is also invalid because it is better to pay taxes rather than over priced medical bills. The last con is that people will have a longer wait time. That is also invalid because the more people that visit the more of a demand there will be for Doctors. A universal health care system would extend care to all Americans regardless of social status or bank account. Health care has become extremely unaffordable for both businesses and individuals.
• These working conditions make it harder for the group to get over the monotony of their days, and this is how they started creating an atmosphere that would make their days more interesting. • Since the place lacks a leader or a manager who could control the work, the timing, and the breaks, work was taken easily and privileges were done to recreation times and extended breaks. • These recreations were given names depending on the activities done during the period of time, such that “Banana time”, “peach time”, “Coke time”.. Personal system: • These workers are not indolent or unqualified; some of them might be even overqualified for the position, but the fact is that boredom and monotony makes them unable to focus on their tasks, which leads them to starting this kind of inappropriate behavior. • Their work does not seem to require any competency, creativity, or high level analysis; it is just manual,
He did not appreciate their hard work and constantly criticize and try to bring perfection out of the work through ruthless means. He assigns the same work to more than one person causing redundancy and wastage of resources. He did not trust the employees for their dedication and commitment neither did the subordinates. He used to call subordinates even during their vacation or after hours of work to attend some documentation work that he need to present the next day. He is ruthless in the sense that he presents impossible deadlines for the people who work under him.
Many companies do not believe in their workers; thus, they need to test them once in a while. Workers also show abased attitude toward their employers. Most workers choose to simply do enough work to stay out of trouble. Walderman criticizes many people for causing this situation in the workforce. He criticizes the media for not reporting the labor issues.
As employers want the workers to work efectively for the company they have to turn up for their work, but if they are ill or don’t turn up the company still have to pay them their loan (even though some employers think this is not fair). The caste study rate of absenteeism in 2005 was 2% and in 2007 it was 3.1% this shows us that people are more often ill this might be due to not enough leisure time as a lot of companies want to keep their workers busy and not to have more workers than they actually need or the workers are just lazy and don’t want to turn up for work.
