The rising number of individuals without health insurance has been one of the most pressing issues at the state and federal level for many years. The U.S. has an estimated 50.2 million citizens without insurance coverage and the highest healthcare costs relative to the size of the economy in the world (The White House, 2011). With the 2008 election, presidential candidate Barack Obama focused on the need for American health care reform. President Obama assumed office in January 2009 and wasted no time urging Congress to pass his health reform proposal, the Affordable Care Act. On June 10, 2010 the President signed an Executive Order creating the National Prevention, Health Promotion, and Public Health Council (HealhCare.gov, 2010). The Council is responsible for a National Prevention Strategy that coordinates leadership at the federal level and among all executive departments and agencies with respect to prevention, wellness, and health promotion efforts across the government (HealhCare.gov, 2010). According to the Surgeon General of the Council, Dr. Regina Benjamin, the National Prevention Strategy presents visions, goals, recommendations and action items that public, private, nonprofit organizations and individuals can take to reduce preventable death, disease and disability in the United States (HealhCare.gov, 2010). Another launch in improving the Nation’s health is a ten year agenda called Healthy People 2020. Healthy People 2020 is the result of a multiyear process that reflects input from diverse groups of individuals and organizations (HealthyPeople.gov, 2011). Their mission is to increase public awareness and understanding of health and disease, provide measurable objectives and goals that are applicable at state and local levels, and to create social and physical environments that promote good health for all (HealthyPeople.gov,
