Health Care Segment Agency - OSHA The government did not always enforce regulations and processes to protect workers and their safety in the past, unlike today. Some states had safety regulations in place, but no federal guidelines supported a worker's demand for a safe work environment. Certain states today use the term "work at will"; however, the conditions under which workers voluntarily go to work differ greatly. Historically that phrase may have meant employees working under hazardous conditions, even life-threatening, and the workers had little say in the matter because they needed their jobs. Workplace accidents and deaths decreased dramatically since the creation of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in 1971.…show more content…
Businesses experience benefits from this certification, such as fewer accidents in the workplace, lower workman compensation insurance costs, and less work time lost because of work-related injuries. OSHA will first schedule an on-site inspection of the premises to evaluate possible hazards or standard violations. The agency representative will review the company’s safety program and discuss any hazards observed by employees. Next the company will have the opportunity to correct any identified dangers and implement a safety system consistent with OSHA standards. The third step, if applicable, involves lowering the rate of accidents or injuries in the workplace below the national average for that particular industry. A company will obtain SHARP certification upon successful completion of these processes and after the OSHA state consultation manager verifies all necessary information (Sherman, 2013).
