According to American nurses association disclosing patient's details without their permission is considering breach of confidentiality (ANA, 2012). Disclosing patient's information is against medical ethics. Hippocratic Oath and Nightingale Pledge mentioned the importance of patient's confidentiality and the healthcare staff's commitment towards keeping patient's confidentiality (American Medical Association, 2014). All healthcare should ready to follow code of ethics for maintain the standard of patient care. Breaching of confidentiality may lead to weakening the relationship between healthcare staff and patients.
Unit tile: Handle information in health and social care settings URN: J/601/8142 Credit vaule:1 Level 2 By briony blowfield 1.2 explain why it is important to have secure systems for recording and sorting information in health and social care setting We do not want other residents to gain access or read private information about each other. We need to think about the visitors who come in they too should not have access to anyone else’s medical notes or the care they are receiving. The person receiving care could become embarrassed by other people knowing. It is information to make sure information is kept private and confidents as we do not want the wrong information to go in the wrong hands. Nurses, care worker and other health professional should have access to care plans and care plan never left in the public area; they are always locked away in a cupboard in the office, clearly marked with the number of the room on it.
These are all things we expect to get when we visit the doctor as this is why we go there. However the biomedical model also puts some less obvious guidelines in place for doctors and other medical professionals to work to. For instance no blame should be attached to the patient who comes for help, no matter what the condition and that the cause of any illness is biological and only biological. It is these guidelines which make the biomedical model so affective when treating patients directly for their illness. Some of the main benefits of using these guidelines and the biomedical model however can be more easily seen when looking at an infection like HIV and AIDS.
Doctors and Medical Science The rapid advancement of medical science also means a doctor who truly Owns their Expertise must always be reading, learning, and thinking. When doctors own the limits of their expertise and a patient’s problem falls outside their competence, they refer the patient on to someone else more suited to solve the problem. They have no objection to patients who want a Second Opinion – they recognise they do not Own the patients’ final choice, they are not Omniscient, and their ego is not the most important thing here (the patient’s health is). In contrast, No-Ownership doctors are afraid to show their lack of expertise and may refuse to refer patients beyond their competence, on to more competent
By showing respect to the patients, they would feel comfortable around you because respecting them means that you are treating them friendly and equally. The staff should respect you and your privacy. The patients don’t have to give any details to any of the staff if they don’t want to. Every individual has independence therefore the staff should respect this. Also, if you’re going to receive a treatment or going to have an operation, the staff should ask you to fill a form and ask for your permission and ask if you agree with the type of treatment that they will provide you with.
There has been many debates to weather doctors should be able to refuse lazy/old patients expensive treatments as they are not beating their habits, so why should doctors have to give these patients the treatment when they are not making the effort to get their body in a fitter, healthier state, and there is people out there desperate for surgery who have made the effort to be in shape and they can’t get the surgery because it is too expensive, but on the otherwise, why should these people have to suffer without help? In hospitals all over the world there are smokers, overweight people and alcoholics receiving the same treatment as other patients that are healthier and choose not to harm their bodies by using harmful substances, which I personally think is an absolute disgrace. As these people who abuse their bodies have the same “right” to these expensive treatments even though some of the substances they choose to eat, drink or inhale cause damage, disease and infections within the human body, and not enough is been done about it. People that work for the telegraph would agree as on their website it states "Smokers, heavy drinkers, the obese and the elderly should be barred from receiving some operations, according to doctors, with most saying the health service cannot afford to provide free care to everyone." - this information can be found on -http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1576704/Dont-treat-the-old-and-unhealthy-say-doctors.html Some doctors say old people may not be healthy enough to survive operations and could be life threatening and doctors are allowed to discriminate old people if they think they really need the operations to cure/help them, however the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) says "doctors must not discriminate against patients who have brought their illnesses upon themselves.
This act should be null and void, since a physician should not be allowed to deny aid to one in need. Even though the Hippocratic Oath is not taken up by all physicians, it still should be followed, since it contains guidelines of how to be a “good” physician. It states in the Hippocratic Oath that a physician is “to practice and prescribe to the best of my ability for the good of my patients, and to try and avoid harming them.” In other words, a physician must not harm a patient, whether it is making mistakes or denying them aid. When someone is in need of medical assistance, a physician should not deny it just because he does not want to. Their top priority as a doctor is to help others, and one is not helping someone by denying them aid.
The Data Protection Act Over the recent years, the Data Protection Act has been put into place into organisations, such as the NHS, which prevents certain data being held about an individual without their permission. The data protection act prevents discriminatory practices take place in a health and social care setting. The Data Protection Act means that you have a right to ask an organisation not to hold or use information about you that causes substantial unwarranted damage or distress. The data protection act prevents this having a negative effect on an individual’s physical and mental wellbeing as revealing information would be an infringement of rights as it is a person’s human rights to have their data protected. If confidential data is shared publicly this could cause an individual’s self-esteem to decrease dramatically therefore the implementation of the data protection act in organisations is essential so this does not take place.
To illustrate, Melanie quotes “Oh, I hate to be such a bother.” Melanie does not like to bother or be disrespectful to other people. Melanie treats other people the way that she would want to be treated. Furthermore, in the story Melanie volunteers to work in the hospital. Melanie cares for other people and she cares for their health. Melanie would want people to get enough treatment as possible in the hospital.
First and foremost I would take extra precaution to ensure my computer screen and patient files weren’t visible to other patients. Second of all, when speaking with patients, it is imperative that I know my surroundings to make sure there are not other patients or unauthorized persons within earshot of myself and the patient I am speaking with. I also would not share any patient information with family members, friends, media or any other unauthorized medical professional without proper written consent from the patient. The consequences for breaching patient confidentiality can be serious. When a patients’ medical information is given to unauthorized persons, at the very least, the patient is most likely going to find another doctor or facility.
