Healing Hospital: A Daring Paradigm Nina Skaria Grand Canyon University: HLT-310V 10/19/14 When it comes to health and healing, there are many different components that come to play. In the hospital setting, patients are constantly disrupted during the day whether it is for blood draws, procedures, receiving medications, etc. The disruptions do not stop at nighttime. Nurses must stop in to check on their patients, fix the IV machines that are beeping, or come in to get vital signs. While these are all important throughout the nighttime, it does not allow for healing. The body repairs the most during sleep and during quiet times. The question here asked is why hospitals, the very place where healing is most needed, allow for such high levels of noise and sleep deprivation? Minimizing environmental stressors can allow for maximum recovery for the patients while protecting their privacy and dignity. The healing hospital paradigm involves healing the client as a whole. This involves not just curing the disease. The paradigm’s focus is to address the patient and family’s cognitive, emotional, and spiritual well-being. In the hospital setting, barriers and stressors must be overcome to create a healing environment. This paper focuses on the paradigm of the healing hospital, examines its influence on the care giving process, and details the components in terms of spirituality. In a Healing Hospital, there are three basic components that make it what it is. A healing physical environment allows for patients to recover and feel well rested. Some external environmental factors include noise, stress, or morbid settings. This can result in panic or anxiety for the patients and the families. By creating a loving, caring, and compassionate setting, families are able to quickly overcome stressful factors and any environmental issues that arise (Eberst, 2008). Staff members
