A Day To Forget september, 11, 2013 Declan Gunn mr. Roddy 9th grade English When I started playing rugby I knew very little about the game. The most basic concept of passing the ball backwards was totally foreign to me and was learned the hard way through screaming team mates motioning backwards as I stood there clueless. The only thing I truly knew was that it was tougher than any other sport I had ever played. Unlike football, there is no padding, no protection and most importantly no helmet. In Europe, if you are not playing soccer, you are playing rugby. Though soccer is still considered everyones favorite pastime, rugby is slowly reaching great popularity as the sport and its fans reject any melodramatic behavior of faked injuries…show more content…
Unfortunately, for me this meant that many of my smaller and younger teammates were experiencing their first concussion through rugby. The issue of head injuries, caused by contact sports, has been a topic discussed by both government officials and news sources alike. The importance of protecting yourself from serious injury was therefore also a topic that was seriously discussed amongst the clubs parents. My mom decided that, due to all of the extensive injuries within my team, I should wear a scrum cap to protect my head as much as possible. A scrum cap is often worn by players who play within the scrum during a game. Often times, this means that they are continuously in full body contact with their own teammates and the opposing team. However, my position of 'wing' consisted of placing myself on one of the sides of the field and running the full length of the field to score a try. Ultimately, that meant that a scrum cap was not very necessary as my position was not experiencing full-contact throughout the eighty minutes of playtime. However, my mom was fully convinced that the ½ cm of (barely there) foam padding was going to save my life. Despite all of her nagging, I refused to wear the scrum cap, because in my opinion the scrum cap is utterly useless and does not even protect a player from a 1 mph spitball that is flying straight into his head.
