This was the prison system in the 1700’s. Prisoners were punished by beheading, hung, whipped, and stoned. In the late 1700’s, Benjamin Henry Latrobe built the Walnut Street Jail it was used to reform prisoners instead of harsh punishment (Goodban, 2006). Prisoners received the bare necessities to sit, sleep, and eat were their only luxuries. When the death penalty was no more the jail suffered overcrowding which led to riots, escapes, and prison guards were attacked.
Later in the film Andy takes a young prisoner named Tommy under his wing and finds that Tommy’s old inmate was the real murderer. Andy explains it all to the Warden and he finds it to be a very thrilling fictional story that Tommy cultivated to entertain Andy. Andy had a secretive plan up his sleeve to save him from all those years of misery and gets revenge on the Warden for being such a hypocrite and “obtuse”. As we watch this
The director shows this by the sounds and angles of the camera during scenes and by the way many people talk at once shows the differences of life between the city and the peacefulness of Samuels home. The close up on Samuel’s face during the murder with the expression of terrified face with a wide open eyes and the tension of the music shows us the corruption of his innocence and the conflict with the world around him there is also another evidence when he tells Eli that he would only kill the bad man. Schaefer, McFee and Fergie go to the Amish world looking for john book they are faced with many obstacles. When thewy first enter arrive at the farm, the soundtrack and the close up view on the guns are there to remind us the violence and show us that that is the only way they could keep their corruption. The gun fires between John Book and McFee are there to represent the violence and even earlier in the film at the parking area, the guns are used as a symbol of thriller and crime.
Jails were now used to displace people like the poor or the mentally ill. These early jails were in horrible condition they were filled with filth, violence, little medical care, and poor food. In 1773 John Howard who was the new sheriff of Bedfordshire was doing inspections of the local jails found lack of discipline, inmates with diseases, filth, and lack of sanitation. He did not like what he had seen so he worked with members of the English House of Commons to Draft the Penitentiary Act of 1779. This act had four requirements for English prisons and jails.
This puts emphasis on how lifeless the prison is and how dehumanising it is. We see Andy arriving in the bus and we see him in a close up, handheld shot, showing us the fear and worry that he has on his face. The handheld shot also shows us his discomfort and nerves. This shows that Andy is starting to realise what his fate is; his loss of freedom and an end to his life in the real world. The light is harsh inside the bus and behind Andy we see bars on the back door of the bus, with the green grass behind them, suggesting that he is trapped from the outside world with no way out.
The use of the dogs begins the evil use of force, which helps Napoleon maintain power. The Shawshank Redemption is a film based on the Stephen King novel “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption”. It is based on the imprisonment of a thriving young accountant named Andy Dufresne, played by Tim Robbins. He is sent to prison for the murder of his late wife and her lover. Andy is enrolled in Shawshank prison, a disheartening place where hostility from both the prison guards and inmates is not only tolerated but quite common. While Andy is serving his sentence he comes across a man named Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding, played by Morgan Freeman.
He later comes up to this dining room where people are gathered for a feast, but in reality everyone is there for a reason hence the "we are all just prisoners here of our own device" (stanza 6). They are sentenced to death by a beast and they can choose to die or try to survive, but can't ever really escape. He starts to realize what's really going on, "last thing I remember I was running for the door" (stanza 7). Yet, he couldn't really go anywhere and was told this by the nightman. My interpretation of this is that he is obviously on drugs because he's been breathing in the smell of colitas.
After the trial, even after tom was found guilty. They all stayed seated and rose up as Atticus left. They were showing him respect. The Lynch Mob was another example of racism in this novel. This was a mob of a group of men from the town that set out to break in to the jail and kill Tom.
America's prisons have been called "graduate schools for crime." It stands to reason: Take a group of people, strip them of possessions and privacy, expose them to constant threats of violence, overcrowd their cell-block, deprive them of meaningful work, and the result is an embittered underclass more intent on getting even with society than contributing to it. Prisons take the nonviolent offender and make him live side by side with violent offender. They take the nonviolent offender and make him a hardened criminal. America has to wake up and realize that the current structure of our penal system is failing terribly.
