In order to prevent the spread of infection in hospitals it is vital that healthcare workers practice proper hand hygiene to include the use of gloves, adequate hand washing, and hand sanitizers. Personal hygiene is very important in limiting the spread of virulent bacterial and viral infections. Besides hand hygiene healthcare workers should use other protective wear such as aprons and masks. Many of the organisms that contribute to Hospital Acquired Infections or HAI’s have become resistant to traditional antibiotics and can spread rapidly from patient to patient. Most people in the hospital are already immuno-compromised and susceptible to infection. In the past medical equipment may have been used from patient to patient without being disinfected, i.e blood pressure cuffs or stethoscopes or a nurse may tend to 3 patients in a row without disinfecting his or her hands in between. These practices can easily spread bacteria such as MRSA and C. diff throughout a health system. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is caused by a strain of staph bacteria that’s become resistant to the antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections. Clostridium difficile (C. diff or C. difficile) is one of the worst offenders of bacterium. As the bacteria overgrow they release toxins that attack the lining of the intestines causing a condition called Clostridium difficile colitis; which is an infectious diarrhea. Many hospitals promote good hygiene practices by placing hand sanitizer stations throughout their facilities. Hand washing is the most important and effective way of preventing and controlling cross infection from healthcare staff. Gould et al (2013) stated the most infection is delivered to patients directly via hands of health workers. Transmissions of pathogens via hand of healthcare workers increase the incident of nosocomial infections.
