Hamlet Essay Identify a key scene which can be seen to be extremely important for a number of reasons. A very dramatic and intriguing key scene in William Shakespheare’s “Hamlet” is the closet scene, Act III Scene iv where Hamlet sees his father’s ghost again and kills Polonius. The scene reveals to us Hamlets madness, violent rage and desire for revenge. I feel the scene was very dramatic and has many consequences for Hamlet and for Ophelia (who goes mad at the tragedy of her father’s death.) The beginning of the key scene is important because, Hamlet has been summoned by his mother, who is furious with him for events surrounding the play-within-the-play, in which it has been suggested clearly that Hamlet’s father has been murdered by his brother.
“Thou poor ghost.” (I, v, 97) Hamlet pities his father, as he was murdered and was not given the chance to pray. This conjures frightening thoughts in his mind, for if he were to be murdered as well, would he be sent to burn in purgatory? Towards the middle of the play, though Hamlet’s thoughts still point towards suicide, he begins to toy with the possibilities of what death could be like. “To die, to sleep; … perchance to dream.” (III, i, 60-65) He may find some comfort in death if death
Old Hamlet informs his son that he was murdered by his brother. He then asks Hamlet to avenge him, “Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (I.v.25). Old Hamlet refers to himself as “his”. This is the first time Hamlet hears that his father was murdered. He almost immediately begins planning his course of action towards revenge.
Romeo and Juliet go through a series of unfortunate events which ultimately leads to their deaths. The bad luck starts off with Romeo killing Tybalt and getting banished from Verona. After Romeo and Juliet tie the knot a fight breaks out between the Montague’s and Tybalt Capulet. Even though Romeo is filled with love and happiness, he is set off when Tybalt kills Mercutio, so Romeo gets even by killing Tybalt. The usual punishment for murder at that time was death, but Romeo was only banished from the Verona walls.
The personality traits of insanity and intellectuality also contribute greatly to the death of Hamlet. Hamlet’s tragic flaw is his procrastination. Without a doubt, Hamlet portrays procrastination and indecisiveness multiple times in the play. The ghost of Hamlet’s father visits him in the beginning of the play informing Hamlet that he was murdered by his own brother, Claudius: “The serpent that did sting thy father’s life/ Now wears the crown”(I.v.44,45). Furthermore, Shakespeare exhibits how Hamlet chose to devise a plan of acting mad, rather than avenging his father’s death immediately, progressing to his demise.

His death - physical corruption - is a precursor, signifying to the audience the ultimate fate of all those characters exhibiting signs of corruption. Polonius seems to be the most obviously corrupt character, but the centre of evil of the play's plot and of the kingdom is Claudius, as he kills King Hamlet. At the beginning of Hamlet, before Hamlet is told by the ghost that Claudius killed his father, Hamlet is broken up over his father’s death, and the marriage of his mother and Claudius his uncle.. “The funeral baked meats did coldly furnish forth the marriage tables.” At this time he doesn’t show any signs of madness, only sorrow. “Together with all forms, moods, shapes of grief, that can denote me truly.” After some time passes Hamlet is visited by the ghost of his father. The ghost instructs Hamlet that he must “[r]evenge his foul and most unnatural murder.” so now Hamlet has to revenge the death of his father. As Hamlet contemplates killing Claudius ( his uncle) he begins to doubt the words of his father’s ghost. As he is trying to determine if the ghost is a “friendly” or “evil” spirit, the players arrive at the castle.
Hamlet’s Madness In the play Hamlet, by Shakespeare, the main character Hamlet, battles with struggles during the play. He goes through changes of his father’s death, his mother’s re-marriage to her dead husband’s brother, seeing a ghost of his father, the girl he loves having a father who makes her believe that she can’t love him, and living through is step-father trying to have him killed. In the play, it is thought that he goes mad due to all the lost love of Ophelia and the pressures that he is presented with throughout. Moreover, during all of this, he is also claimed mad because of the way he acts and talks around the king and general public. However, this is not the only type of type of play or drama in which the main character acts crazy or mad in order to enact revenge upon someone to avenge someone or just to purely gain revenge for some personal purpose.
King Hamlet's ghost uttered to Hamlet, “The serpent that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown” (1.5.39). Hamlet agreed to avenge his father's death. Now, his life had a purpose, which is to kill Claudius. Aside from his father's death, there was something else that sent him spiraling down. He was denied access to his love, Ophelia.
