LSI Self Assessment GM 591: Keller Graduate School Part I: Personal Thinking Styles (primary, backup, limiting) My primary style of thinking and acting is the avoidance style. Human Synergistic International states that a person with the avoidance thinking style generally lays low when things get difficult and stressful. This type of person tends to avoid conflict and can have trouble making decisions. This type of person can also be non-committal due to the difficulty in making decisions. My 92 percentile score in this avoidance category means I scored higher than 92% of a group of 9,207 people that previously took this life styles inventory self evaluation.
Buss's research only gives an indication of expressed preferences rather than actually showing the choices people actually make in real life and so this research lacks validity. Waynforth and Dunbar's research supports Buss's findings, Waynforth and Dunbar analysed 900 US lonely hearts adverts from four newspapers and found that 42% of males sought a youthful female and 44% also looked for traits that indicated physical attractiveness, these figures were almost halved in women and indicates a difference in preferences. Women were found to advertise themselves as attractive whereas men highlighted their economic status. The concept that men look for young, fertile mates can also be seen in homosexual relationships, Kenrick et al (1995) analysed 783 singles adverts in New York magazines and found that like heterosexual men the homosexual men were happy for a partner to be over or under five years of their own
In “Women Don’t Ask” by Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever, Linda Babcock investigates whether or not women get less of what they want because they simply do not ask for it. Linda heard from an associate dean that women do not ask for greater opportunities, men do. Through her investigations, Linda found that the difference between salaries of different genders was extremely significant; it differed by an estimated four thousand dollars. Those who did ask for a higher salary saw an increase of nearly the same amount, four thousand dollars. Linda then conducted another study, involving both genders playing a game, and being awarded money; if the participants asked for more money, they would receive it.
Competition is relegated to activities that are do not affect the hiring or promotion of employees. This effectively denies an employer the opportunity to examine the individual merits of an applicant, unless one presumes race and genders are “merits.” This can have drastic negative consequences on morae, as workers lose motivation to improve. As former Governor of California Pete Wilson said, “What's the purpose of preparing our children to compete and win in the marketplace if the marketplace itself is governed by laws that discriminate against the most qualified in favor of the less qualified?” (Jabbra, 2000) The mere fact that minorities are underrepresented does not mean they are being unlawfully discriminated against. If one were to look at the National Basketball Association, one could not deny the overwhelming lack of non-blacks in the league. Does the NBA seek only to hire black males by artificially creating an environment that precludes whites, Hispanics, Asians, and other non-black athletes?
Individually these elements would not be as effective because a state could earn high test scores because of unequal spending per student, and vice versa. This is where the argument is the strongest, but there are, however, weaker parts of the argument. For example, the arguer does not touch on issues which also have implications on why the schools are preforming the way they are. In the paper he states as part of his argument, “think tanks rate sates on things like class size and teacher pay among other things.” He does not, however, touch on these differences which might be the reason why Utah is doing seemingly better than Florida. There are no statistics provided in the argument comparing class size, teacher pay, or socioeconomic conditions which may leave a reader wondering if other factors are to blame for Florida’s poor performance.
The test results stated more or less that I am bias towards straight people. My feelings towards straight and gay people are the same (neutral). I do not prefer to associate with one over the other. So my overall impression of the implicit association test is not very good for these particular reasons that I have stated. • Do
The the study was replicated by Hofling (1966), who aimed to test the possibility that obedience may change when in more realistic circumstances, this study found an obedience rate of 95%, so obedience does occur in real life settings. Milgram's study has generalisability because of this. A limitation of this study is lack of mundane realism and so it has low ecological validity, with participants possibly not believing the confederate had not come to harm with the use of electric shocks. Another limitation is that study has many ethical issues, like deception as well as lack of informed consent, these conditions may have been required but are still obvious issues with participants being lied to about the true aim of the study. Another ethical issue that would have been prominent was protection from psychological
the American Dream. This theory is very useful in highlighting certain points that are not explained within other theories. Albert Cohen, describes the idea of status frustration. By which he argues that deviance and crime result from the inability of those in lower classes to achieve mainstream goals. It is useful for highlighting why, in the working class, those who cannot achieve in education, they then therefore suffer from status frustration and in this process turn to other people who also cannot achieve in this institution.
Week Four Assignment RES/320 October 7, 2013 Week Four Assignment The purpose of this study is to determine how comfortable females are with their body versus males whose body types are similar. This short questionnaire was developed due to a study that indicated females view their bodies quite differently than men. Fallon and Rozin determined that both men and women erred in estimating what the opposite sex would find attractive. Results suggest that, overall men’s perceptions serve to keep them satisfied with their figures, whereas women’s perceptions place pressure on them to lose weight (Fallon, Rozin, 1985.) The following study continues on this study to determine the local view of women and men’s perception of their body.
PHIL 320 Final Essay Topics 1) At first blush it can seem as though all forms of discrimination are morally suspect. But even a little pressure shows things are not so simple. It would, for example, not only seem permissible but perhaps even morally required for a driving school to "discriminate against" hiring the vision impaired as behind the wheel intsructors. This suggests that the underlying issue isn't discrimination per se but rather "unjust" discrimination. We, of course, examined some of the claims of justice in chapter 3 where Nozick pressed for the importance of liberty and private property and Rawls argued that the principles of justice fall out of what people in the original position would opt for.
