Realise that you are of high social status and that to begin to squeal, or raise your voice, or make scared and erratic movements, or get very defensive, is to cast yourself into the mould of the omega male, carved out for you by the media and by the cunts that may once have bullied you in school. Of Mice and Men- How is the character of Candy important to the novel as a whole? The novella 'Of Mice and Men' was written by John Steinbeck in 1937. It was set at the time of the Great Depression in America, during which there was widespread poverty and long term unemployment. The novella begins with two itinerant workers; George and Lennie traveling to a ranch in hope of work. It is here that they meet many other characters including Candy 'an old swamper'. Through the character of Candy, John Steinbeck takes the readers on journey through which they see the difficulties facing the older members of society at that time.
Curley has obviously decided it is not worth fighting him but before he leaves he instructs Lennie as he still wants to intimidate him and show him that he has an authoritive figure. In this extract Curley has clearly unnerved Lennie as Lennie constantly seems to be in some discomfort for example “Lennie squirmed under the look and shifted his feet nervously”. John Steinbeck does well to produce powerful imagery by simply using the word “squirmed”. This shows that Lennie is embarrassed and does not know what to do and this causes tension as Curley senses his advantage while George is worried about a possible confrontation. Another example is “Lennie twisted with embarrassment”.
As he says, “it is a high time to face the persecutors who haunt the bright kid with thick glasses from kindergarten to the grave.” The bullying, the teasing, and the harassing for their abilities and their “disgusting taste” must be stopped, as stated in his writing. Using a firm tone toward the issue you can tell he has experienced this, and that connects him deeper with the audience though pathos. Leonid Fridman shows a very negative attitude towards the focus of “Nerds and Geeks.”He supports disagreement through pathos, satire, and a impressive word choice, He over take the mind of the reader with these rhetorical strategies. Through elementary school, middle school, and in high school, everyone needs their nerds and
