According to “A brief history of The Green Party”, The Green Party of the United State is a current political party committed to ecology, social justice grassroots democracy and non-violence. Their mission is to build the party into a well-established alternative in the United States. They are well represented by candidates around the country who work on issues concerning their community. The party has a broad platform that ranges from protecting the environment to pro-labor agenda to human rights and social justice. The Green Party was first established in Tasmania in 1972, but it did not make its way to the United State until 1984. The Green Committees of Correspondence eventually become known as the “Greens” or “Green Party USA,” and the first Green Party candidate appeared on the ballot back in 1986. According to “A short history of Green Party U.S. Senate races” statistics, in 1990, Alaska became the first state to which the Green Party got ballot status. It was since followed by California in 1992 and many state started individual membership-based organization. It was also in 1992 when Linda Martin and Mary Jordan became the first Green Party candidates for U.S Senate. Mary Jordan received over 20,000 votes (8.37% of the total) in a three way race for U.S. Senate in Alaska. Linda Martin made greater strides by earning 49,921 votes (13.73% of the total), while the Republican only picked up only 26.9%. In the 1990s, the Green Party had several of their member ran for U.S. Senate in Alaska (twice), Hawaii, California, Maine, Oregon (twice), New Mexico, and New York. And by 2000, the Greens ran 10 candidates for U.S. Senate, compiling a total of 706,538 votes nationwide, led by Vance Hansen of Arizona (with 108,926, 7.08%), Medea Benjamin of California (with 326,828, 3.08%), and Doug Sandage of Texas (with 91,448, 1.46%). He officially announced his entrance into the presidential campaign through the California Green primary. His decision to enter the presidential campaign sparked enthusiasm throughout the Greens across the country. States that have not had an active Green Party representation were encouraged and motivated by his bold move. By election time, the Greens had placed Ralph Nader name on 22 ballots nationwide. He was also qualified as a write-in candidate for another 23 states. By August 1996, the Green Party held their first national Nominating Convention in Los Angeles, California. Ralph Nader was joined on the ticket by Native American Winona LaDuke, who was known for her environmental and women’s issues, and for her role in battle for Native American lands. Together, they took on a task of challenging the platforms of the Democrats and Republicans. The Nader-LaDuke campaign ended in 4th place after Perot, totaling over 700,000 or 1% of the vote nationwide. They received the best mark in Oregon, where they came in at approximately 4% of the state total.
