Kate Gill Professor Floerke English 100 17 April 2013 “Going Broke for a Cause” As a child growing up in America, kids are frequently asked the question of what they want to be when they grow up. Whether it is a policeman, dancer, astronaut, or a secret agent, they are taught that some type of education is required. And to become successful they must go to college and graduate. Each passing year the cost of a college degree increases, resulting in more and more students who complete college ending up with a mountain of debt. Because of this, the motivation of students wanting to go to college decreases. They assume that they can get a well-paying job without the necessity of a college degree. Fortunately for many students there are scholarships available to them such as merit, need-based, sports, and local scholarships. The most familiar are the merit-based scholarships, which are awarded to students who show abilities in various areas. Some merit-scholarships focus on a student’s grades, while others focus on extra curricular achievements or test scores. The need-based scholarships are given based on how much financial help is needed. Financial aid is viewed as the difference between how much a family can afford and how much the cost of college will be. Students who play varsity sports could possibly be offered scholarships based on their ability to play for their college. These scholarships exist because school sports are a large part of a college’s national marking. Top high school athletes will often get offered full-ride scholarships, while other student athletes may be offered extra financial help in their financial aid package. Lastly, local scholarships can be found in a student’s high school or hometown. Several local businesses set aside extra money for these scholarships, and they are rewarded to students directly. Often a student will have to go through an application process or possibly enter an essay contest. Why is a college degree so important? It is important because of the opportunities it provides. Whitney M. Young, an American civil rights leader, once proclaimed, “It is better to be prepared for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.” Possessing a college degree means being prepared for possible career opportunities in the future. Although the cost is high, he reward may be even higher. As investing in a 401k helps one prepare for the financial future, attaining a college degree is an investment in one’s future career
