Ethical and Critical Thinking Questions on GMOs 1. Explain the ethical dilemma (question) and explain why it is a dilemma. Should genetically modified food be allowed for sale in the U.S.? Even though there are many pros for this idea, there is not much back up on studies on the issue. There are many unknowns about this dilemma that are scary for some people. 2. Describe the different viewpoints within the dilemma. Explain why each creates questions that must be answered. The good that can come from genetically modified food are; it can make crops pest proof, disease resistant, more nutritious, and intolerable to weather conditions. How do different contexts (i.e. cultural/social, educational, technological, political, scientific, economic, personal experience) influence your viewpoint? My viewpoint is influenced by how there have been no severe problems that have caused severe side effects in society. Our technology has been studied by many professionals and seems like it will do no harm in the future as it has not yet. 5. What factual information supports your viewpoint? Explain. All the benefits I had mentioned in question 2 were all studied by scientists and proven by them. The information I retrieved is from a government based website. 6. Describe at least one viewpoint on the issue that differs from yours. Explain the facts and ethical principles that support this opposing viewpoint. (You may do more than one opposing view) One viewpoint that differs from mine is reduced effectiveness of pesticides.
