Generation Y employees want different things from jobs BMAN60211 Employee Communications Introduction In 2010s, as many new employees enter the workplace, it causes a large amount of attention to their needs, work attitudes and values. Since they grew up in a more multicultural, globalization and technological world community, their personalities and characteristics as well as their expectations are quite different from their parents. So it also leads to new problems and challenges to the organization‟s communication and management. In order to motivate and manage these new employees effectively, it is important to understand the characteristics and expectations of these young workers. ID 9020613 In this essay, I will review the previous articles and then conclude who they are, what they want and then discuss the implications of communication ways, strategies and leadership styles in the organisation. The definition The new generation employees, often be called as Generation Y, Millennials, Echo Boomers, or Generation WWW (Dulin, 2008), comparing to Generation X and Baby Boomer. In this essay, I use Gen Y to refer them. Different writers had different opinions about GenY: Smola and Sutton (2002) think they born between 1979 and 1994; David Foot describes they born between 1980 and 1995 (cited in Ng et al. 2010); Dulin (2008) claims they born from 1977 to 1997. The common of these definitions is that they all focus the year on 1980s and 1990s; they are the next generation of Gen X and the youngest generation in workplace (Myers & Sadaghiani, 2010; Ng et al. 2010). The characteristics of Generation Y Through many qualitative and quantitative experiments, academic authors conclude some main characteristics of Gen Y.
