Aging Theories and Research Development SOC 322: Sociological Aspect of Adulthood September 16, 2013 Gerontology is the “study of old age and the process of becoming old.” (Merriam-Webster, 2013) Life cycles are said to be formed by “distinct stages or phase” (Hillier & Barrow, 2011). The stages are from infant to child, adolescence to adult, and parent to grandparent and with each new baby the cycles starts over. There has been years and years of research on aging, articles written and theories made, all on how we age, why we age and the way we act or are supposed to act when we become older. I do not feel that there is just one answer, one way in which the cycle of life plays out. I feel that the way we live in our younger year

The 1980’s was a decade of dynamic cultural influence. During the 80’s Americans learned how to blend two competing cultural mindsets into one cultural expression of American society. The generation which cultural analysts have specified as “baby boomers” (individuals born between 1945 and 1965) emerged as the primary influences and role players of the early eighties in all segments of society. While the “baby boomers” were assuming their places of leadership in the 80’s their children, known as the “baby busters,” were already generating a counter culture which challenged the accepted norms of their parents. Stuart A. Kallen states in A Cultural History of the United States that, “the

Jeff Jordan Professor Banks English 1A March 20, 2012 The Ever Evolving Forever Young Society is going to change no matter what anyone tries to say or write. Today’s younger generations are breaking patterns and standards that were set forth by previous generations. This is made apparent in the words of some recently written essays by Joseph Epstein “The Perpetual Adolescent” and Mark Edmundson’s “Dwelling in Possibilities”. These essays argue that America’s younger generations are distracted, disconnected from the world that’s right in front of them. It is inevitable; people grow and as they grow they change.
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Being that I am getting close to retirement from my current career and still young enough to start another one, I am heavily looking at the unemployment rates distributed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This type of data is qualitative in nature as defined by the authors of our text: When the characteristic under study concerns a qualitative trait that is only classified in categories and not numerically measured, the resulting data are called categorical data. Hair color (blond, brown, red, black), employment status (employed, unemployed), and blood type (O, A, B, AB) are but some examples. (Johnson & Bhattacharyya, 2010, p. 23). Being that this data is qualitative in nature because it only measures category, this type of data is normally displayed in a pie chart.
