Student Survival Guide Christie Phelps Gen/105 December 10, 2009 During the past nine weeks I have learned many useful skills and a plethora of information. I have made personal action plans for each topic that we have learned about. This will be my student survival guide. When taking advantage of Axia’s educational resources, I will download materials, files and digital stories to my computer. I plan to save all of these files to a memory stick, that way I will be able to access these file any time that I might need to. I do not plan to download to any portable devices other than my memory stick. Navigating the University Library will be a difficult task for me. This will allow me to determine which points are the key points, in each separate article. Academic honesty is a very important part of every student’s education. By reading and studying Axia’s academic policy I will be sure to follow all guideline to ensure that I am honest. I plan on referring to this document as many times as necessary. Understanding the consequences of plagiarism is a very delicate topic. There are many consequences for plagiarism, including; receiving a zero on that particular assignment, being suspended or even being expelled. However, I do think that if the plagiarism was unintentional, the instructor could speak with the student and resolve the matter amicably. In efforts to avoid plagiarism I plan to properly cite any work that is not my own. I will do this by following all APA guidelines that pertain to citations and references. I will also include references pages when necessary. By using the plagiarism checker provided by the University Library, I can also avoid plagiarism. I will spend a set amount of time on each class certain days. On the days I do not schedule for classes, if I have free time, I can catch up on any assignment I need to. The way I am juggling school and family responsibilities will be to set aside time for school in the morning while my children are at school and my husband is at work. By doing so, I will have plenty of time for my family responsibilities in the afternoon and at night. When I get a job I will change my school time to after the kids have gone to bed, so it doesn’t interfere with my family time. I have always prioritized the things I need to finish each day. By making a list of everything I want to get done that day, then putting the most important at the top of the list, I will be sure to finish the most important first. This also helps me to avoid wasting time on things I do not need to worry about. Using reading comprehension techniques will help me better understand what I have read.
