Yang Yang Mrs. Collions ENG 107 6 December 2013 Grandly, we cannot deny that taking a gap year actually delays the regular study, which means students are actually one year behind their classmates, and they also finish their study late. Moreover, lots of high school students choose study abroad programs or other learning programs. Those programs are usually expensive. Therefore, taking a gap year may cost them a lot. Also, some people argue that taking a year off may cause high school students lose the studying interest because they are exposed to the real social life earlier, and they are more likely to get lost in the fancy world than their classmates. Taking a year off can also be risky; some unexpected things might happen like the car accident, the unexpected injury and etc. Although the opponent might be valid, I still believe high students should take a gap year before getting into college for the following reasons. Firstly, taking a year off after high school can help students perform better academically. According to David Rynick, executive director of Dynamy Internship Year (MA), "While there is significant peer pressure, parental pressure, and school pressure to go right on to college, the adventurous few who take time off are richly rewarded.” (“Gap Year”) By taking a gap year, high school students are able to travel different places, they meet different people; they hear different life stories. It will absolutely broaden their horizons. A gap year is able to provide lots of new things that high school students never have experienced before; so, it is a really good way to learn, to gain new knowledge. In addition, Rae Nelson, who is the co-author of The Gap Year Advantage once stated: “We did a survey of 280 kids from gap year programs and we found that 60% said their gap year either confirmed their choice of career or major,” (Driscoll) It is a
