“Illegal immigration is a major cause in the overcrowding of our schools and our prisons.” (Bender, David) Michael Huffington, a former member of the US House of Reps. For California says that, “Many illegal immigrants come for two purposes that are both destructive and expensive: to commit crimes or to receive government benefits.” (Huffington, 63) “For instance, the 18th Street gang in Southern California is one of the nation’s most violent street gangs with a staggering 20,000 members. More appalling is the fact that 60 percent of the 18the Street gang’s
National newspapers have reported the spread of different types of gangs, including ‘Asian gangs’ (Thompson 2002a), ‘Turkish gangs’ (Thompson 2001b), ‘Albanian gangs’ (Hopkins 2002), ‘Black gangs’ (Barker 2003), ‘Drug gangs’ (Carter 2002) and ‘Girl gangs’ (Thompson 2001a). In some respects, the reports of gangs in the United Kingdom sound similar to reports of gangs in the United States. The National Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS) reported an increase in gun possession among gangs (NCIS 2002). They noted a high incidence of black on- black firearm crime
High Crime in Urban Areas Travis E. Heath SOC 305 Crime & Society Timothy Knox 5 November 2012 Abstract Crime and our criminal justice system affect everyone in the United States in one way or another, weather you are a criminal or the victim. Impoverished urban areas with a large minority population are disproportionally impacted. Through my research I discovered that a higher number of violent and drug related crime occur in theses areas. I also found that studies show that people within minority groups are more likely to suffer hasher punishment for similar crimes committed by non-minority groups. In this research paper I will analyze the break down the officially recognized races in the US, crimes specifically relate to these urban areas that are not present in more rural and suburban areas, finally how are crimes handled both at the judicial and executive levels in poverty-stricken communities as opposed to upper class communities.
Violence ensures that members adhere to the gang’s code of conduct. Authorities through out the country report that gangs are responsible for most of the serious violent crime in the United States. From a personal reference, I know a gang member who has shot and killed his own brother due to a gang and drug related issue. Drug use within the life and mentality of a gang member is a
Crime Comparison in Metropolitan Areas CJA/314 February 14, 2012 Crime Comparison in Metropolitan Areas The Federal Bureau of Investigations Uniform Report gathers information of criminal offenses that come to the attention of local law enforcement for property crime, violent crimes, and it also displays the data for the offenses that has been cleared (“Federal Bureau of Investigations”, n.d.). The data from this report is very important because it provides the official crime statistics for the United States. Reported Incidents The crime that will be the primary focus of comparison for this paper will be Robbery and the cities chosen for the comparison will be Atlanta, GA, and Baltimore, MD from the years 2009 to 2010. Atlanta is a rather large city located in the state of Georgia. Atlanta is the largest community in Georgia with a population of 420,003.
In New York City, an average of seven Latin Americans were killed a year from 1986 to 1989, but in 1990, that number increased greatly. In that year, twenty-three Innocent Latin Americans were killed by police gunfire. It is obvious that racism is still prevalent in today’s world and its no surprise that there would be racist people in the police force. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed because this can cause many problems externally as in random arrests and internally as police conflicts. People should be interviewed and maybe even subjected to a lie detector test to prove that they have no outstanding hatred toward certain people.
This disadvantaged population, which has been largely ignored by both the written law and society, creates great social and economic costs for the United States. Juvenile delinquency and crime needs to be addressed and funds need to be allocated to research in order to control the increased rates of juvenile crime and, in addition, provide more programs for rehabilitation to this delinquent youth population. The District of Columbia has the highest rates of juvenile delinquency in the country and, not surprisingly, there are far more crimes committed in minority and low-income neighborhoods than in the wealthy ones. That said, much of the district consists of largely urban and disadvantaged areas. With high rates of unemployment and poverty, and without family and neighborhood support, many juveniles turn to crime as a way of sustaining their lifestyles or surviving in an otherwise dangerous neighborhood.
Gun casualties and incidents throughout the country have woken the public up from its ignorance and shown them the danger guns can pose to society (Martinez, 2013). While some people want a complete blanket ban on the ownership of guns, others wants an easier access to guns so that every person may look after their own security. Part of what makes the term gun control a very controversial topic is that it’s used in a ambiguous way that does not explain the details of the issue and the demands, apart from literally controlling guns. The two prominent sides of the debate are the groups who ask for liberal gun laws that make it easier for a person to procure guns and conversely, there are groups who want to repeal the second amendment. I personally am a strong believer that an “ideal society” should have no guns; nevertheless crime is a big problem to the citizens of our society and guns are necessary.
Gangs function with the methodology of creating strategic allies that will help them further their own destructive agendas. Prison gangs have been around since the late 50’s and 60’s mainly for the reason of inmate security. Security became an increasing concern as the violence escalated in the prison systems. In reaction, groups became to form largely on the basis of race and creed. You have the Aryan Brotherhood or “AB” which consists almost
For example, if the maximum prison term for armed robbery is 15 years and that conviction is doubled, the city has to pay for an extra 15 years of housing to inmates. That would be over $300,000 just for one inmate. This is one of the reasons we are so broke now. Another reason why I feel this is a bad bill is because I don’t think this idea will deter the rate of this crime. Minorities or bums are more likely to commit these crimes.
