Many states have highway patrol and, or state police officers who commonly are found along highways enforcing state traffic, criminal or civil laws. Officers in state prisons also are considered part of each our state law enforcement. A difference from the others is they enforce state laws within the confines of a state institution. Our federal government has many types of law enforcement agents, all enforcing laws and policies. These are some of the highest of are government.
Law enforcement agencies today still patrol the streets with the goal to prevent crimes. Public approval and cooperation were the two principals of effective policing. Peel stated that police should perform duties upon public approval and must secure the cooperation of the public in voluntary observance of the law to maintain the public’s respect (Larrabee, A. 2012). Police need to understand the different cultures which can be accomplished by training and education.
Responsibilities of a police officer are varied, and may differ greatly from within one political context to another. Typical duties relate to keeping the peace, law enforcement, protection of persons and property, and the investigation of crimes. Officers are expected to respond to a variety of situations that may arise. Discuss the problems and successes associated with recruitment of new law enforcement officers? Police departments are making efforts to better reflect the communities they serve.
Police interact with the private lives of citizens on a daily basis. The main operational function of the police is the protection of life and property, maintaining social order, investigating crime and preventing it. The job of a police officer consists of many duties to include being a mediator, a counselor and community organizer. The ultimate goal is to provide quality and professional service that is effective and efficient to prevent crime (Walker & Katz, 2008). Police Departments and federal government agencies are similar in organizational structure and administrative style.

Responsibilities of different uniformed public services In this assignment I will be looking at the main responsibilities of two public services the police and the army. I will also be looking at the performance indicators and what they do on a daily basis. Police The responsibilities of a police officer are often extremely broad. Although their main responsibilities are usually keeping the peace, enforcing the law, protecting the public and property, and the prevention and detection of crimes, officers are usually expected to be able to respond in some fashion to a wide variety of situations that may arise while they are on duty. The actual purpose of the police in theory is to deter crime before it happens.
Also this paper will identify the principle role and functions of police organizations, their roles as it applies to the law, and also identify the major organizational theories associated with policing. To begin the United States has just about 18,000 law enforcement agencies. This number of agencies includes 12,646 local police, 3,061 sheriff’s departments, 49 state police agencies, 1,376 special police agencies, and 45 federal agencies (Schmalleger, 2009) The first type of agency is the federal agencies. Federal agencies are United States government agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) which are empowered by congress and whose primary responsibility is to enforce federal criminal laws. The second type of agency would be state agencies whose responsibilities is to assist local law enforcement agencies with their criminal investigations, operate centralized identification bureaus, maintain criminal records, patrol state highways, and provide training for both county and municipal officers.
How well developed organizational policies and procedures guide the use of police employee discretion to ensure the philosophy of the department is met. Police Organizational Tasks and Policy All criminal justice agencies must have an organizational structure in place to help them function efficiently. Most modern police agencies use the organizational subsystem in conjunction with organizational principles and policies and procedures to ensure a department operates efficiently and effectively to provide police services. If there is a breakdown in the organizational structure it can disrupt the day to day operations of the department. The effects of this structural breakdown can range from poor employee morale, abuse of sick leave, high attrition rates, allegations of corruption, and distrust from the public.
