Ricardo Martinez Prof. Jennings CJ230-DA-FA11 9/21/11 Response paper The most interesting subject I found that the Principal assistant county attorney Elizabeth Stefano spoke about was the juveniles that she and her peers tried diligently to help. She spoke about not incarcerating the juveniles but rehabilitating them just as we speak about in class. She spoke about the funnel effect and how it pertain to the juvenile justice system. Elizabeth Stefano explained the criminal justice process is like a funnel, wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Early in the criminal justice process, there are many cases, but the number of cases dwindles as decision makers remove cases from the process. Some cases are dismissed, some juveniles are rehabilitated, while others are referred for treatment or counseling. Elizabeth stated that when a juvenile is put on probation the probation officer works with the parents to try and steer the juvenile straight. What this means is that it is the probation officer and parent’s responsibility to try and help the juvenile put and end to his/her recidivism. The only negative about the probation officer and the parents working together is the parent’s inability to help the juvenile or the probation officer. I forgot to ask Elizabeth how often do juveniles become rehabilitated especially when the parents and probation officer work together. If the juvenile’s parents are avid about steering their son or daughter’s ways then this is an effective method, but as we know that’s not always the case.
